This is the instructions that I read in a medical journal (sorry can't

remember which one) for teaching a child to swallow pills. I've posted

this in the past, so if you've read this before, sorry.

First, above all, don't get upset if you have to try this several (maybe

even hundreds of times) before your child gets the hand of it. The key

is to be ready to REINFORCE when your child attempts to do this. Play

up successes in a BIG way and you will have your child swallowing pills

and greatful that he/she doesn't have to drink all the liquid.

First, start with the smallest possible pill. Place the pill at the back

of the tongue and close your child's mouth. Instruct your child to

swallow. If the pill doesn't go down, remove it and try again. Place

the pill at the back of the tonge, but not so far that it causes your

child to gag. Close the mouth and this time try giving the nose a gentle

squeeze. This will cause the child to swallow and the pill should go

down. Remember, this takes practice and patience... try to remain calm

and happy throughout and you may find that you have a champion pill

swallower on your hands. My who is 5 has been swallowing pills

for over a year now with no trouble.

Leigh.
