My son, Gabe, was treated by Dr Burkhalter in Hawaii for about 12 weeks. He

should be great, if that is, your son doesn't have atypical club feet. He did

Gabe's tenotomies on both feet. Dr Ponseti said he did a very good job, and

since Gabe hasn't needed a second tenotomy. However, I believe he had his mind

made up ahead of time about Gabe having " surgical feet " . Gabe has to wear

's not Markell's. Burkhalter did fail to recognize Gabe's atypical

feet... We spent the $ for the Markell's, which of course he couldn't wear. When

we told DR Burkhalter about Gabe's incessant crying. He responded that some

children just simply can't " tolerate the shoes, and wind up having surgery after

all " . He is head of pediatric orthopedics there...no one else sees his kids,

which are many. We never waited to see him, even at scheduled appointments, for

less than an hour. He's a good DR, but limited in that he's a military DR with

SEVERAL patients. After, spending close to 3 months in Hawaii, we

were sent back to Guam with shoes that didn't work. Rather than go back to him,

I have been staying with my parents in GA. I pulled Gabe out of Tricare Prime,

and put him into Tricare Standard. We have been traveling about every three

months to see Ponseti in Iowa, which has been worth it. I do know, if you don't

get the results you want with Burkhalter, that there is another very good

Ponseti-trained DR in Honolulu you could see.

Tripler Army Med Ctr supposedly has a Dr on base that uses the P.

method, which Im fine with depending on what I see when I meet him.

From the description the head nurse gave me, he sounds right on. And

I cant complain about Military Drs, our Doc at Keesler AFB, has been

amazing to us and knows her stuff altho' shes not certified by Dr P

himself.

Anyway, the Dr on base is Dr. Burkehalter. Any chance that anyone

knows anything at ALL about him??

There is also a Shriner's Hospital in Honalulu. They practice

I just now saw your post. I hope you will still see this even

though it's been awhile :)

My personal exp with Dr. Burkhalter was great. My son was seen by

him from birth to 7 months old. When we left Hawaii, we went to

Iowa to find out whether Dr. Burkhalter performed the ponsetti

method correctly. Dr. Ponsetti said that he did a wonderful job.

What a relief it was! We are now stationed in CT and travel to NYC

to see a highly trained doctor that Dr. Ponsetti recomended. My son

is now 19 months and had his most recent appt this past Monday. My

sons feet are doing so perfectly that the dr says he doesn't even

need to see us for 6 months. He says that his feet couldn't be

better. That tells me there that Dr. Burkhalter does know what he's

doing. I hope this has helped you some:) I understand your fears

entirely as I had the same!

Thanks for all the info. Ive been MIA for a LONG time and just now

came back and remembered that Id posted this. I appreciate all the

info. I called Tripler and asked that Dr B call me back just to

discuss his training and relieve my fears and HE DID IT!! So he

already has my respect for that alone. Other military dr's wouldve

blown that off w/ a quickness.

He reassured me that he wasnt surgery happy. And thats just the way

I put it to him over the phone.. that Elijah has an atypical right

foot but that its responded very well to alternative casting

techniques and is able to wear his Markell's with little to no

problem. After seeing Elijah respond so well despite being atypical

for almost 13 months now, he'll have one hell of a fight on his

hands if he suggests surgery.

Elijah's current Dr just got back from her 6 months in Afghanistan

and we'll see her next week. Since I last posted, Elijah has

celebrated his 1st birthday and pulls up and walks around

everything, still holding on. He'll stand alone for just seconds at

a time but is very leary of going out on his own to walk. On the

other end of things.. he's turned out to be one great climber so I

know his walking issues arent related to lack of strength in his

legs. He's been over, under, around and through everything we own.

As for going to Hawaii... we are waiting on hard copy orders but

have been selected for the ones we wanted. I did see that there was

another Dr that was P. certified. I called the office, they do

accept new pts and they accept Tricare Prime so I guess if Im not

happy on base, I at least have an alternative.

Thanks again for all the great advice and words of wisdom.

Well, it sounds good. Dr. Burkhalter is a very good doctor; I think what upset

me about him was the fact that he told us that if Gabe didn't respond well to

the Markell's, surgery was our only option. We went to Iowa to see Ponseti, and

Gabe has been in 's for about 5 months. WE're very pleased... the

Markell's were a nightmare for us. I'm not sure if DR. B. knows that the

's are an option for atypical cf...? I had meant to email him , but my

hubby lost his email address. Anyway, it sounds like everything is going well

for you. Glad to hear it.

Hello my name is Alizia and my son has been treated by Dr.Burkhalter. Let me

just reassure you. He is a very skilled and capable doctor. Unfortunatly in my

son's case he did need surgery. We are stationed in Japan and were sent to

Tripler when my son was 10 mths. My son has bilateral club foot which was

pretty severe. I know out of all the doctors available in the military he is

one of the best. Good Luck!
