Guest guest
Just wanted to say thanks to you all Ann-Marie, Laurie, , Janet for your ideas, thoughts and prayers for Penny. Thank goodness that little nightmare is finally over, after four trips to Emergency... In the end we had had enough of ER and got her to see a gyno who did a laparoscopy the next day in a private hospital (as opposed to our public hospital system here where your head has to be hanging off before you get admitted...). The laparoscopy showed a patch of something that looked like scar tissue on her womb, which the doc excised and lo and behold the pain has gone away and she is back to her old happy bubbly self. What a huge relief! He is not sure whether it was endometriosis, or left over from a cyst that had earlier burst, but she doesn't really care now that the pain is gone! When she went to ER for the fourth time I asked the mito doc who is at the same hospital to check that it was nothing to do with MELAS and she kindly went over and ordered an x-ray to check on bowel obstruction but that was clear. (In the Scaglia document on MELAS there are some complications listed at the back which are worth noting for times like this.) Before her procedure I printed out the info on the UMDF site about anaesthesia and sent it to the anaesthetist who I don't believe read all the way through it, and administered Propofol during the op, and afterwards put her on you guessed it a Ringer's Lactate drip. She was supposed to go home the same day but instead got violently ill and had to stay two nights. As soon as we realised what was in the drip she was taken off it and got better the next morning... We will know for next time to check everything every step of the way.. Again thank you so muchly for your support! Pamela Re: need some thoughts re severe pelvic pain Hi Pam, I am sorry to read that Penny was in such severe pain that you had to call the ambulance and go to the ER. Thankfully they gave her something to help with the pain if only for a short while. It sounds like the doctors in the ER are on the right track with suggesting those tests. I am surprised that they didn't do the Pelvic Scan while she was there. Please make sure you get the Pelvic Scan done as soon as possible and then if necessary(according to the results of the scan) schedule the laparoscopy. You mentioned that Penny got sick on the Tramadol(morphine tablets). Maybe you can call her PCP and explain to him/her what is happening with Penny and that the ER gave her morphine tablets but she got sick on them and ask if they can give you a different prescription for her pain. That pain is horrible and no one should have to have to try to live thru the pain. Heating pads only do so much. You said that there might be a spasm involved, what makes you think that a spasm may also be involved? Sorry, I might have missed something in your other post. Please tell Penny that I will keep her in my prayers and I hope that she is feeling better and that the pain level lessens. And yes 21 is the age of being care-free and fancy-free, not having to worry about anything, enjoying life to the fullest. I hope that Penny will be care-free, happy and back to enjoying the best time of her life.!!! :-) Hugs, Ann-Marie At 10:24 AM 9/28/2005, you wrote: >Thanks everyone for going to the trouble of giving your >thoughts. Guest guest
HI Pamela, I am so glad to hear that you got Penny into a ob/gyn and they were able to remove the scar tissue and that Penny is back to her old bubbly self and is no longer in pain. You noted the Scagila document on MELAS that there are some complications listed at the back worth noting, can you direct me to this document? I am not sure if I ever read it or not but would like to check it out in case I haven't read it. Thanks!! As far as the Lactate Ringers goes I now have them list it as an allergy in my medical file. And they will ask you what happens to you if you get L.R and then you can explain to them why a Mitochondrial patient shouldn't receive L.R. Glad we were all able to help!! Tell Penny I am glad she is better and no longer in any pain. Guest guest
Will do and thanks again Ann-Marie. Scaglia MELAS doc is at www.emedicine.com/ped/topic1406.htm . I think someone else also recently referenced it. pam HI Pamela, I am so glad to hear that you got Penny into a ob/gyn and they were able to remove the scar tissue and that Penny is back to her old bubbly self and is no longer in pain.
