is 8 months now, and although I realise he shouldn't be walking or

crawling yet, he seems pretty clueless as to what to do with his legs. If I pick

him up, he just holds them out straight in the brace position. He stands fairly

well, but won't pull himself up to the standing position. He still does not roll

over, belly to back or back to belly. Should I do some patterning? What about a

walker? Perhaps that would give him some idea as to what his legs are for? I

suppose I will see progress in the future, but he just seems so clueless at the

moment. He just kicks his legs, both at the same time, as though the brace were

still on. He is out of his brace 5 - 6 hours a day.

Any tips?

I know it sounds crazy, but I would crawl around on the floor so Zoe

could see me. I really don't have any suggestions, other than don't

worry. He will get there before you know, probably all at one time!!

,

First of all let me assure you that kids do things on their own schedule. Some

learn early, some take their time. So worrying isn't necessarily the need here.

But I can understand your worry. The rolling thing should be a part of his

repertoire by now. So, if you are thinking that (good name by the way

:)) needs a jump start, call your local Early Intervention program. They will

evaluate him for you for free and then provide physical therapy for you often at

little to no charge as well.

Our physiotherapist suggested to us to do the bicycle with our son who also

would not use his legs. This also showed him that he can bend one leg and keep

the other straight for crawling. We also show him all the steps he needs to do

to stand and sit back down.

I hope this helps,

Our therapist showed us how to roll our son on his side and prop him against the

couch or something so he stays like that. We put stuff in front of him to play

with. This seems to be working. He hasn't figured out how to get his feet to

roll to his side, but he rolls over from his side to tummy.
