Guest guest
Adam- Some people have had success using lavender body lotion. I know when I have light to moderate pain in my legs and arms-it does help..don't know why it works... Also massage can help relieve cramps in muscles. In the past, I have tried a shiatsu handheld massager by homedics-runs about $48.00 retail in the store once. I didn't have the money to buy it, and when I went back to the store-they were sold out. Here's a link: http://www.homedics.com/prod/detail.aspx?ID=74 I am waiting for them to re-stock, so I can buy it. It really did help! when I wasn't it this amount of pain. Good luck. Guest guest
Hi , I was sure I'd read that same thing some place before, but my psych. Dr. has put me on a very high dose of Vit. B-12. They are lozenges that melt under your tongue, and the strength is 500 mcg., which is 8,333% of our daily value. We only need about 15 mcg. I asked him about that when he told me to buy these tablets, and he said " no, it's impossible to get too much of it. It won't hurt you no matter how much you take. " He thought it would help my neuropathy. Well, it hasn't done anything for the neuropathy, but it has given me a little more energy, at least. It doesn't seem to be making things any worse though, but the neuropathy has steadilly worsened the past several months for me. And, it's particularly so tonight, as I've been cleaning for three days in a row (spacing it out, a little each day), to be ready for our apartment inspection. Whenever I'm on my feet for a long time, that will increase the pain, of course. So I am sure it's not from the B-12, as it's no worse than usual for being on my feet a great deal. But if someone has the reference on this, that says that high doses of B-12 will cause problems, please let me know, so I can chew my psych. Dr. out . Why not, it looks like I won't be able to see him any more, anyways, as our Governer has cut out all funding for Community Mental Health, except for those who are severely mentally ill, those in crisis, and for the developmentally disabled. Trying to save a few bucks... but, use your head, G'vner... A person in crisis costs thousands of dollars PER DAY to treat, whereas one not in crisis, costs maybe a couple hundered dollars a month. A years total is less than one day in the hospital. The average stay in a psych hospital is what? Probably at least a week, most stay two or more weeks. OK, off my soap box now LOL. That's not even supposed to be part of this email, but it crossed my mind when I started typing on the subject LOL. Guest guest
Hi, this is for anyone/everyone! I was taking 100 mg of B-6 daily until I read in a health magazine at the beauty shop that it can cause nerve damage so I immediately stopped taking it and I am so glad that I did since I read this, so Buyer Beware I guess. Thanks for reiterating what I had read and my B-6 is for sure going down the drain tonight. Guest guest
Cin Many of the mito docs recommend either a B-50 (50 mg. of each B vitamin) or a B-100. I split my dose into two B-50s per day. Nerve pain and neuropathy is common in mito. Mine varies at different times of the day, but that in my feet which was getting worse seems to be caused by my bulging disk as it went away after my first epidural, but is now back. laurie > Hi , > I was sure I'd read that same thing some place before, but my psych. It's my understanding that Dr. Welch (my neuro) will get the records needed from my hospitalization in July and they want a letter from Dr. Baker (my ortho) who discovered that I didn't have Parkinsons. Guest guest
One more time: I had been wondering if my scolosis of the spine has been causing part of my problems with the neuropathy in my feet now I feel that perhaps that is part of the problem as I have so much pain in my back and down my legs. I dug around and found some old nylon dress socks that had been my husbands and lately I have been wearing them and it may be mind over matter but I do think they are helping me a bit. I still use the Antodyne machine at least once a week but between my breathing treatments and new physical therapy plan that Dr. Baker is trying home and for a couple of weeks at the PT area in his bldg. Has anyone ever heard of mito causing a person's voice to start going? I go tomorrow for a voice eval to see if they think they can salvage what is left of my voice and then they may try some voice treatments? Guest guest
Dear Adam, For me, the way I usually know the difference between muscle and nerve pain is that my nerve pain is a burning, electrical sort of sensation and the muscle pain is more of an aching type pain. Don't know if everyone would concur on that but it's been my primary issue for decades. Also, massage for me has felt good at the time but the results didn't last long. In the end, I couldn't afford a treatment that had such brief results. But again, we're all different. Best, Shayna > > Hi, > > Thanks for all the responses..keeping the typing brief. Guest guest
Sorry about your back and leg pain. I had bad sciatica due to a disk injury, and spinal arthritis because of the resulting surgery. I've found that sometimes I am paralyzed from the waist down (cannot move at all) in the morning due to stiffening of my spine. I find that sleeping with a pillow (folded-up) under my knees keeps my spine aligned well enough not to be paralyzed in the AM, and also I take the supplement methyl sulfonyl methane (MSM) which provides sulfur to help the joint proteins. Two of my older (over 80) relatives take it as well, and swear that their hair is thicker and less grey too Take care, RH > > Hi , > > I was sure I'd read that same thing some place before, but my psych. Guest guest
Shayna I get several weird pains that I was told were also neuropathy - things like an ice pick being driven into my body, feeling like a bug is biting, feeling like water is running down my arm or leg and itching after the ice pick pain. It is really embarressing to be swating at a bug that doesn't exist. laurie > Dear Adam, > For me, the way I usually know the difference between muscle and nerve > pain is that my nerve pain is a burning, electrical sort of sensation > and the muscle pain is more of an aching type pain. Guest guest
Have you gone to a speech pathologist? My mom lost her voice after an operation to get a colostomy, they never figured out why and since she had other issues they didn't pursue it. I was thinking of asking her to go to either a speech pathologist or an ENT to figure out if it is muscle weakness or something else. My voice gets weak during my worst episodes, but my cognitive issues with speaking and holding conversations are worse for me. I am a year younger than you Maybe you could help your child through a Leap Pad story or similar? It reads the story aloud with a special pen. It's not the same, but just a thought. My son is almost 5, and I usually start the story and he finishes it (the three little pigs or other common story). My kids are very used to filling in words for me by now... I've even heard of therapy that teaches different speaking techniques, here are a few web pages that may be of interest: http://www.fcvh.com/problems.htm http://www.voiceproblem.org/disorders/nproblems/parkinsons.asp (on parkinson's disease, but applicable to other neuro disorders; this website, www.voiceproblem.org, seems very good in general) Take care, RH > > > Hi , > > > I was sure I'd read that same thing some place before, but my > psych. So I have been put on > oxygen and that seems to help to some extent. > > Good luck.. > > Ann Ann, Many years ago when my son was young, I had difficulty reading aloud also. After a few minutes my throat muscles would begin to cramp, and if I tried to keep going my voice first got raspy, then eventually sounded like I was strangling. That's the way it felt too, though I knew I wasn't strangling, of course, it was just that sensation. The voice-giving-out, reading-aloud problem did vary a lot from day to day, and on better days I could read longer to him. Time of day also mattered. I could read more in the daytime and less at bedtime. Because I had been a teacher and believed so strongly in the importance of reading aloud to children, I did continue reading to him for short periods of time whenever I could, even if it meant some hoarseness the rest of the day. Around age 10, my husband took over the bedtime reading. By then we were reading whole chapters of longer books each night, and I just couldn't do that. I had the same problem with singing and with extended conversation. If I'd sing one hymn at church, I was hoarse the rest of the day. I'd had a double major in voice and piano in college, so giving up singing was not something I wanted to do. But eventually I decided that listening to singing was good too, and that in conversations I just needed to learn to listen more and talk less. In my case, I believe the problem is primarily muscular weakness in my throat and in the vocal muscular mechanism, rather than insufficient oxygen. Anyway, just wanted to encourage you that life can still be good with less talking and more listening! Hugs, Barbara
Guest guest
Shayna, I agree with you, completely. My neuropathy burns, and I get these real sharp shooting pains that might go only the length of one toe, or they might go the length of my entire calf. The muscle pains, well, I don't have that too much, thankfully. But I know when I've overused my muscles in the past, say like for packing and moving several boxes in one day, or something similar, well, that's what the muscle aches feel like. One thing that helps me, is using our local Holiday Inn's whirlpool. Again, I'm fortunate to have this. Our local Holiday Inn allows us to buy pool passes each month, and it's now $50 a month. It used to be $35, and this is for one or two people. For up to 5 people, it's now $100. That might be steep for a family, but if it's just for one person, and you have a friend that can split the cost, well, $25 is a good deal. And you can go any time from 6:30 AM to 11:30 PM, shower, use their towels, etc. If you have a water bill, you know that in itself is worth it! I get in the pool too, and cool off, and do a few pool exercises, and then hop in the whirlpool before I leave, to help relax my muscles. But of course, I can only tolerate about 7 minutes of the whirlpool before I start sweating like crazy and have to get out. But, if I go back and forth, from pool to whirlpool, and am able to spend a couple of hours there, my muscles get a pretty good workout. I pay the full $50 myself, because I have a ten year old daughter, and of course, there's no way I'm going to leave her home while I go enjoy the pool every day in the hot summer LOL. So, for those of you who are able to use a pool and whirlpool, you might want to check around at the local hotels, or you may even have an indoor college or high school pool that's available. ----- Original Message ----- From: shaynapearl Dear Adam, For me, the way I usually know the difference between muscle and nerve pain is that my nerve pain is a burning, electrical sort of sensation and the muscle pain is more of an aching type pain. Guest guest
Shayna That is the same for me. I will be happy if my additional epidurals take care of the burning. I can get a script for Neurotin at any time from my neuro, but hope to avoid it for as long as possible. Guest guest
Thanks Barbara. I too majored in voice for awhile and I can get through 2 songs on a good day. But then the rest of the day is spent on very little energy. My new dr gave me a breathing exercise machine to try, thinking this would be a good course of action. BAD idea. I tried once and went from feeling ok in one minutes to feeling like I had been hit with a mack truck. WHAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hit and run. So I was honest and said, I cannot do the exercise thingie. It uses my energy in reserves. At least he understood and my pulmo I guess explained why I couldn't. I love to sing and try very hard to sing even a chorus, to keep my diaphram working. But its getting where I hum or mouthed the words... no more days of carefree singing....... I appreciate your words of hope. Have a good rest of the week. Ann
Guest guest
I'm not aware of B-12 being a problem, just B-6. Cindy Trumble wrote: >Hi , >I was sure I'd read that same thing some place before, but my psych. Dr. has put me on a very high dose of Vit. > >Take care, >Cin > Re: Thanks and more ?s on muscle pain > > >Be careful of too much B6, that can cause nerve issues and damage. > > > >adamm4321 wrote: > > > >>Hi, >> >>Thanks for all the responses..keeping the typing brief. Guest guest
This may sound silly, but you shouldn't really ever put any meds down the drain or flush them down the toilet as they get into our water supply that way. Dolores wrote: >Hi, this is for anyone/everyone! Thanks for reiterating what I had read and my B-6 is for sure going down the drain tonight. Guest guest
How would one dispose of old medications? A person wouldn't want to have it in their trash with medication in it and it end up falling out of a dumpster into the reach of a child or person it would be damaging to, would they? Guest guest
Thanks . I probably read the info on the B-6, thinking it was talking about B-12. Believe me, it's very easy to confuse this poor soul here LOL. Guest guest
Unless you're almost 70 like me, it's OK to swat at " bugs that aren't there " , if you get a strange look you can always say your were waving at a friend and get by with it but when you get my age you have to be more careful. I even worry about laughing out loud sitting here all alone or saying " Oh NO " , when the home team misses a touchdown and looses the game. Guest guest
Dolores, I thought it was the other way around? Once we reach a certain age, we can get away with a whole lot more, than we could when we were " young'uns " . I have a few years to go before I reach 70 (but, not that many, really... I'm 46 now). Of course, I just blame all my memory lapses, my uncooridination, etc. etc. on all my meds... I always thought THAT was better than saying " I'm getting old! " . LOL. ----- Original Message ----- From: Dolores Unless you're almost 70 like me, it's OK to swat at " bugs that aren't there " , if you get a strange look you can always say your were waving at a friend and get by with it but when you get my age you have to be more careful.
