hi everyone

i haven't been on in awhile. i have been pretty busy here at work.

Avery was screened for adhd about a month ago. they said he is on the

high end of normal. since then he is wilder.:) going to the store is

the craziest thing you'd ever seen. he has to knock everything down.

spanking his little booty does nothing. not to mention he is now

punching, for no apparent reason. and watch out if he is mad. can

anyone help me. my friends watch and tell me " i don't know how you

do it. he goes nonstop " . how do you get things undercontroll. or just

get our sanity.

Averys 3rd birthday is saturday, can't believe it.

they really should let 3 yr olds play tee ball. we'd have a star

player.:)

thanks for listening and the help

Amy,

I have a son like yours. Two speeds, on at a 100 miles/hour, or

off. His pediatrician wouldn't even discuss ADHD with me until Matt

was in school and it was affecting school/social situations. I am

not sure if that is the way to go, but it is hard to see at 3 what

is just Boy behavior and what is hyper active. We had to be really

stern with Matt, with firm limits and follow through which was hard,

but it works somewhat.

Now we are on Ritalin and doing ok with school. Hang in there!

Okay, now you are in my area of expertise. Basically, these doctors

need to listen to the moms. If the mom suspects that the child is

too active/hyper, then it is probably true. There is nothing wrong

with a trial of medication to see if it helps. If it does, then

problem solved.

I know it is not as easy as that, however. Many people think that

we are too quick to medicate ourselves and our children these days.

My answer to that is that society has made us that way and if we

need a bit of medication to make our lives easier, to make us more

socially adept/acceptable/comfortable, then go for it. There is no

reason why your child - or you, for that matter - should be setting

an example by not taking meds just because of the above. The proper

medication will not only help socially, but it will enable your

child to be ready to learn, to be able to focus on schoolwork, to

feel successful. I'm a special ed teacher so I am used to kids who

have special needs and can accommodate for them, but the regular

classroom teacher cannot. And he/she will lose patience and

pigeonhole the child and the child will suffer.

Some people think that three years of age is too young for meds. I

disagree. There is so much to learn in the early years. I'm not

talking about ABCs, reading, math. I'm talking about all the basics

that come before that stuff - social skills, gross and fine motor

skills, learning to attend to even a TV program/video or family

conversations, putting a puzzle together, enjoying a story read by

mom or dad....I could go on and on.

The one thing you do have to be careful of, however, is which

medication to choose. Ritalin is usually the first one tried. That

is okay, but it can have the side effect of reduction in appetite

and, therefore, lack of growth and risks for hypoglycemia as a

result. This is not for every child who takes it, though. We are

lucky that there are several other meds available that were not out

there a few years ago. Sometimes trial and error is necessary.

Again, as many of us have counseled other parents, if you are taking

your child to a doctor who does not share the same fundamental

beliefs as you do, or you do not feel comfortable with that doctor,

then change doctors. No one doctor is God. It's taken years of

doctors and coordinating them and working with them, letting go of

some, in order to make up a good team for Max. And he is thriving

because of it.

Go with you gut.

Jodi Z. - and I take meds myself. With all we have been through

with Max and a few other personal matters, I could not function

without them. I am a happier, thriving woman, person and Mom

because of them. I am so thankful that I found a doctor who knew

what to prescribe and has helped me through.
