Guest guest
My son has moderate to severe issues with textures, mainly food texture aversion.. We purchased some GFCF bread from the local Whole Foods store and while it tastes great, the texture is stopping from eating it.. Today he took a mouthful of sandwich (which, if he hadn't liked the taste we wouldn't have gotten that far), chewed it up, but then decided that the texture wasn't right and spat it out on the floor.. Anyone have any thoughts or tips on how to get him to eat it? Since this diet is showing that it's working for him, I don't see any time in the foreseeable future where he won't be needing this kind of bread. I can't have him doing this all the time.. I am working with oral stim therapy with him using toothettes. Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.. I'll definitely try them out.. As for the toothette therapy, I learned this from his speech therapist.. The toothette is a little green sponge on a stick.. I use this to press and rub on his lips, on the inside of his cheeks, and the roof of his mouth. She asks me to do his tongue, but as of yet hasn't he tolerated it long enough for me to do that! LOL.. You can get the toothettes from Home Health Care suppliers (like Walgreens/Osco Drug) but I know that you can also do this therapy with a rough washcloth. We do it before each meal. He clenches his jaw and purses his lips and sometimes it's all I can do to get the little bit of sponge and that narrow stick in his mouth.. Maybe when he relaxes a little better I'll get that set.. We brush his lips, tongue, inside cheeks, etc. We sometimes put peanut butter on it for a treat....this works really well for tolerating texture....and in increases his language range of sounds. Guest guest
heather, have you tried toasting it? my kid only likes crunchy stuff and toasting has helped him avoid the chewed-up spats we used to deal with daily. just a suggestion. i agree that bread is a staple and you'll have to figure something out. we also made him french toast with his bread and that gives him extra protein too. he likes the syrup dipping thing too. you mentioned oral stim therapy using something called toothettes ... what is that, where do you get it, i'm VERY interested in this. thanks- susan abney (mom of cooper 5.5 PDD-NOS and whit 17months NT) RT2@... wrote: > My son has moderate to severe issues with textures, mainly food texture > aversion.. Guest guest
heather, i've been thinking some more about your bread problem ... when i first started my son on this diet, i bought a lot of pre-made loaves of bread, most of which were more like quick-breads in texture. you know, like banana bread my mom used to make. anyway, i found that the Ener-G breads (we like Tapioca Bread and the Brown Rice Bread) were so light and much like the texture of regular breads. we use them every day in the lunchbox and every morning for toast. they also make great (and pretty) little hamburger buns. closest GFCF thing i've ever seen to regular white bread. my kid would never eat the heavy slices of bread, he'd spit the mush out every time. i tried them too and love the Ener-G brand breads. i also tried making my own bread. what a joke! after he caught me crying in the kitchen over another bread failure, my husband told me to go buy loaves of bread and never worry about trying to make a decent loaf of bread again! i'll shut up now! susan abney RT2@... wrote: > My son has moderate to severe issues with textures, mainly food texture > aversion..
