Guest guest
This may get long, but i would apperciate any feedback because i feel like i am about to loose it! My name is Tammy and i have been lurking here for about a month or so. i have an 18 mos old son named noah. he is me and my husbands pride and joy! ever since noah was 2 months old he seemed to come down with a " cold " every 6-8 weeks or so. they were always the same. runny nose, then chesty cough, then clear for another 6 weeks. of course, his pediatrician kept laying on the antibiotics and even one month course of prednisone (due to RSV 2x) YIKES! and his answer to my question " why does he keep getting sick " ... " kids just get sick, dont worry " . when noah was 8 months old, i couldnt stand it any longer. i found a naturopath in the area and immediately took him there. she was great and she started him on several herbals and we used things like hyrdrotheray when he was sick. the illnesses seemed to diminish in severity, but not in length between them. she kept telling me that it would take time, hang in there. and of course the entire time i am loading him up with very healthy food (so thought!) he never had any lunchmeats or hot dogs and always had nutritious snacks and meals. he was also then put on a probiotic to replace lost healthy flora that may have been wiped out during all the antibiotics (about 5 courses total). (just a note: noah was never on cows milk - besides a short time on formula, then switched to soy until we could put him on rice milk after 1 year old) last month, after a month long cold, i had finally had it! i wanted the allergy testing (thinkning he was allergic to my dogs or cats) that no doctor wanted to give him. then i found out that my SIL and her mother (both NP's) and into the natural stuff/acupunture etc...could do the tests! i was so happy. $650 later (testing done at great plains) we had the results. NO environmental allgeries - a big surprise! slightly elevated gluten/casein peptides. he came back allergic to several beans, potatoes, cow milk, wheat, yogurt and peanuts being the worst (3) all the rest where level 1. i was shocked, but started the gf diet immediatley (not cf yet, as per the doctor - levels not too high). its been 3 weeks since we started and now he is SICK! i just wanted to give you an overview of our situation before i asked the questions: noah does not seem have any developmental delays. he has wonderful eye contact. he can play with his toys appropriately, he can ask for things like milk, cookie, food. he can use two words together like " daddy working?? " and so on. he does " playback " words that we say alot, but how else to they learn to talk? he is great with other kids, he rarely throws tantrums, he is always happy and smiling. he had a blast coloring easter eggs saturday with grandpa. he has been showing interest in the potty and always tells me when he's done poop in his diaper. the doctors agree that right now he shows no problems in that area. his ONLY symptoms are this re-occuring " cold " and dark circles under his eyes. they are treating it as Leaky-Gut. one more thing...he has always had normal stools (except of course while he was breastfed - wow, those were something LOL!) what i need to know is: am i barking up the wrong tree here? does this sound like he would really benefit from this diet? the symptoms just dont jive. i have been racking my brain since he was very young and i can feel it starting to overload! i would love to hear from anyone who has had a similar experience or any other advice on this. (one other note: he was vaccinated up to his 6 month appt, but i halted them to do more research and because he seemed to have a bad reaction to his dtap (screamed all night long). he had NO MMR! my SIL told me that could have done him in. - scary) sorry this was so long! thanks, tammy
Guest guest
Hi Tammy, Well your SIL was probably rightand thank goodness you didnt! I believe the vaccines hurt the immune system and the ability to metabolize certain nutrients and toxins for that matter. Have you run a panel to dtermine if your son has any vitamin or mineral deficiences? I believ magnesium deficiency is related to dark circles. He could have other deficiences(zinc for example) as well that would help you greatly to know. I believe that dairy foods should be eliminated from all our diets (I am a cheese fanatic so I dont say this ligtly). Especially if you have a child prone to congestion. I would eliminate that immedietly. You also said that his peptides were slightly elevated? How much slightly elivated? Well, the other thing I would consider , besides yes I think you should atleast eliminate ALL dairy and wheat, is to have an immune system panel run on him with a GOOD immunologist to see if he has immune sys. issues. I believe the mercury in the vaccines could cause this in a sensitive child and even if you dont have an autistic child, many children's consequential symptoms from vacs are very similar. As you know, vac. and antibiotics are a very bad combo. Very hard on the immune system. I dont think you are barking up the wrong tree , I think you should trust your mommy gut because it doesnt get better than that. I think eliminating anything that is hard on his immune sys. would be very important. That includes all foods you mentioned above as well as going pesticide-free and additives in your food--free. Hang in there, Question about my 18 mos DS... Guest guest
Tammy, I was wondering why the doctor does not want you to start eliminating casein yet? for the calcium? the protein? If almonds are not a problem try him with Blue Diamond Almond Breeze milk. Evan drinks their vanilla flavor with no complaints. It has the calcium and the protein. You should find it in most stores with the soy and rice milks. His body will be under attack cleaning up the things that you have to eliminate. He will have a withdrawal to some extent like that by someone quitting smoking, drugs or alcohol. You should try the diet for at least six months and see how he does. Circles then went away. Now I only feed SOME of the " one " foods 1x every 10 days. LJ is allergic to milk, wheat, soy, pork, peanuts, rice, chocolate, cashews and bananas. So once every 10 days I give him a product with soy in it if I want or rice or banana. on Long Island New York * ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Guest guest
Wow, Tammy! Thank God! It sounds like you may have dodged the bullet. I'd still do the diet for at least 6 months...it can't hurt him! And thank God you didn't get the MMR! One of my biggest sources of grief with this is that it was too late for both my daughters...we'd already vaccinated both of them! So I watch my younger daughter like a hawk for any signs of autism (none so far) and have both of them on the diet. Hang in there...I know it is overwhelming...otherwise why am I writing this in the middle of the night, LOL! You can do it...and maybe you are preventing your child from developing autism.
