Dear Caroline and All,

About anti-biotics...... has a BAD REACTION to almost every

antibiotic.

The other day I was reading Dr. Shaws book: Biological Treatments for

Autism and PDD. He gives these reccommendations for ear infections. I

am going to leave out some of the details as far as the why's, in order

to condense the information and hopefully not break any copyright laws.

Dr. shaw qualifies this list by stating that " Remember that there are

exeptions to every rule and anitbiotics may sometimes be needed. "

1. Tough it out and carefully observe your child. Ear drops that

contain benzocaine and a decongestant can be helpful for the pain. Only

31% of practitioners in Holland use antibiotics to treat ear infections.

2. Eliminate Milk, wheat and other common allergens.

3. Stop all cigarett smoking in the house.

4. Don't use antibiotics for colds or flu.

5. If you must use an atibiotic have your Dr. prescribe Nystatin to take

with the antibiotic. This will help to protect the good bateria. If

your Dr. refuses to prescribe Nystatin, you can use the following:

garlic, caprylic acic, grapefruit seed extract. After antibiotics are

completed give supplements of Lactobacillus acidophilus for at least 30

days or consider giving on a daily basis for a while to maintain a

healthy intestine.

6. Get a throat culture done if your child has frequent infections. It

could be Streptococcus pneumonia... and there is a vaccine for this

ailment. (although I'm not so sure I agree w/ the vaccine, i'd have to

check out a list of ingredients in the vaccine).

7. Consider if one parent can stay at home w/ the child til the age of 2

to avoid preschools and day care centers

8. Breast feed your child for as long as possible.

9. Use Echinacea to treat ear infections. This therapy is more helpful

is drops of garlica nd mull (also called mullein) oil are placed in the

ears while giving echinacea. This can clear up an ear infection in as

little as one night.

10. Ask your Dr. for a penicillin shot in the buttocks instead of the

oral antibiotics. This does not kill the good bacteria in the intestines

the way that oral antibiotics do.

11. If your child has 4 or more infections in one year. This could be

and inborn weakness in the immune system. THere are treatments for this

ailment.

12. Consult a health practitioner trained in homeopathy. " The technique

called homeopahty was shown to be more effective than conventional

antibiotic treatment in a German study of 103 children between 1 and 11

years. Homeopathy drops are also available in most health food stores.

After one year 70.7 % of the children treated with homeopathy had no

relapses compared to 56.5% of children treated with antibiotics. The

average number of relapses was also much higher in the children treated

with antibiotics than in those treated with homeopathy. " Source: Friese

KH et.al Otitis media in children: a comparison of conventional and

homeopathic drugs. Head and neck Otorhinolaryngology 44:462-466 1996

13. Consider Tubes in the ear.
