Not knocking the info by all means but I am struggling with this issue because my son has rejected his soy and I have to try rice next. Sure hope he likes that. Guest guest
Debbie Not really sure how much you'd have to eat for 100 calories. My son didn't drink any Milk sub for quite a while. He likes Amond Milk now , which has calcium and vit E. I always use chewables too Rhino calcium/ Animal parade (vanilla). Plus dairy/free in baking and some calcium in juice. Calcium can be added to baked goods. So no matter what he always gets calcium. If you are worried about lack of calcium from diet I'd go for suppliments which will balance out any lack in diet. He actually ate some leafy greens tonight. He has managed to have 3 servings of veggies today plus one fruit. This is a major thing for us. Sounds stupid , but its been a long time coming. kelly > Here my question..aren't most of these foods pretty low in calories so to > eat > 100 calories worth would be an awful lot especially for a kid? We are seeing a DAN registered dietitian on Mon. so I am just waiting for that to start supplimentation. I am sure I will do some calcium supps. And I will look for the almond milk as well. Can't hurt to give it a try. Debbie
Guest guest
Just thinking in print right now, but if humans were meant to get calcium from food sources there are plenty af alternatives in nature like from beans, and spinach ect besides dairy. I do worry about calcium bieng absorbed but since dairy products send my DS in to orbit we still need to be gf/cf. I guess what my brain is trying to process is that you can get natural calcium in food outside of milk. I mean really when did humans start drinking cows milk? Who was the forst person to look at a cow and decide I think I will drink that? It couldnt have always been so. Still a list of calcium sources in food would be helpfull. So now that I am done thinking what I would like is for anyone to add to my list of natural sources of calcium. I will just have to make sure we eat more of thase foods. Guest guest
Here's some info: Calcium in Milligrams per 100 Calories ------------------------------------------- Arugula..........................1,300 Watercress...................... 800 Turnip greens.................. .650 Collard greens................. 548 Mustard greens.................490 Spinach........................... 450 Broccoli.......................... 387 Swiss cheese................... 250 Milk (2-percent).............. 245 Green onions................... 240 Okra............................... 213 Cabbage......................... 196 Whole milk..................... 190 Cheddar cheese.............. 179 American cheese............. 160 Altho the human mother's milk is the best food for a human baby, many now question the N. American/European custom (fairly recent in historical terms) of adults consuming cow's milk, and in such large amounts. There are questions raised about the ability of the human body to utilize calcium with animal protein, such as in cow's milk. Also, the growing concern about high milk consumption and diabetes, prostate & breast cancer. A comprehensive list of links can be found at www.nomilk.com. (Oh, yeah, then there's the hormones, antibiotics, etc., in dairy milk....) > Just thinking in print right now, but if humans were meant to get > calcium from food sources there are plenty af alternatives in nature > like from beans, and spinach ect besides dairy. Guest guest
Yes, I'm trying to build a list now for that purpose, after the discussion concerning calcium, I realized my son is not getting half the calcium he should be getting on a daily basis. He does take calcium citrate (is this or is this not the best in terms of absorption?) but I would like to get the majority of his calcium from foods. Does the bean milk you make taste like beans? If so, maybe I could mix it with rice milk for tasting appeal? Firm tofu= 258 great northern beans 320 1 c raisins= 81 roasted peanuts= 128 white beans= 484 Lolita >what I would like is for anyone to add to my list of natural sources of >calcium.
