Guest guest
I've seen many people post and mention that their son or daughter receives Medicaid and SSI benefits. How do they receive the SSI benefits? And why and at what point to you apply for such benefits? Also, how would a child qualify for Medicaid? Does Medicaid pick up costs that your other insurance does not? I don't been to be ignorant about these issues, I am just uninformed and want to be able to take advantage of as much help I can get for my son. Guest guest
Amy, SSI benefits are available for your child if he is considered disabled. The parents income is also an important consideration. Regular medicaid is also dependent on parental income, but a Medicaid Waiver is not generally based on the parents income. For instance, we are unable to get SSI for our son due to our income, but he is approved for a Medicaid Waiver due to his chronic health problems (RSS). Unfortunately, in my state (Virginia) there is a huge waiting list, so we do not get benefits currently. I was told that if we get off the " wait " list and get waiver benefits, medicaid would pay our son's private insurance premium and have us use that first, then pick up where that leaves off. (I guess it is cheaper for them to pay a premium, then pay all the medical bills). But, like I said, I haven't done this yet, so I am just saying what someone told me. Don't let the Medicaid office tell you you make too much money (if that is your case). Tell them you want to apply for a Waiver. You really have to fight for this. Guest guest
hi amy!! i had called the ss office and explained to them that my son had rss and i was told he might be able to get benefits. they took my info and sent me out a packet of papers to fill out and send back and then had set up and interview by phone to answere more questions. i then had to go to the ss office near me for another interview and bring proof of income, address, ect. under the ADA our kids are considered disabled do to there short stature (atleast that is what i was told) so he was approved (and we fell within the income guidelines for our family size). he automatically qualified for medicaid (we have insurance but this serves as a secondary insurance and picksup anything that our insurance doesnt and or copay). good luck. hope this helps. jodie (nicholas-6 nonrss, christopher-3 rss 23lbs 33 " ght genotropin .6, johnathon-9m nonrss)
