Guest guest
I am wondering if there is anyone out there that has started GHT with his or her child at an older age and would be willing to share their experiences with me. We are looking to start our 9-year-old daughter and I am wondering if we will have enough time to see the benefits of GHT. Any feedback is greatly appreciated! Thank you, Jenni

Guest guest
Hello Jenni, My daughter Maartje started GHT three years ago. She was 8 years and 6 months. The difference in length with other children of her age was much more than now. Her girlfriends are still longer than she is but it is not a very great difference. It is very difficult to make a decision to start gh or not. We have had a lot of problems with Maartje because she didn't want the gh shots. I think it is easier to give a shot to a younger child, because you have to explain less. When a child is older you have to listen and talk to her and it is very important that they understand why they get shots and that they can help in the decision. finally we could make a decision together and I think we did the right thing. I wish you very good luck with everything ! Guest guest
Jenni -- I don't have personal experience but some of the studies I have been reading still show some good results with starting GH at 9 yrs or older. Definitely, the studies find the maximum height gain is starting at 3-5 years of age. However, anything is more than you have without it. Each of these steps will increase her chances of increasing her final adult height: a) start GH now the studies show that with older kids, a much higher dose is needed to get maximum growth; but no greater health risk or side effects have been found so don't worry there c) monitor bone age and puberty carefully (see my last posting) d) if andrenarche shows (pubic hair, body odor) - discuss postponing, but most doctors won't do this since it isn't FDA approved yet e) if blood tests show puberty has begun, strongly consider using Lupron to halt the puberty for 2 years or so to get her that extra growing time Good luck! > I am wondering if there is anyone out there that has started GHT with > his or her child at an older age and would be willing to share their > experiences with me. Guest guest
Hi Jenni Sorry for not being able to reply sooner......I spilled a glass of wine in my keyboard last weekend and now use a screwdriver to type letters W E A S.....frustrating doesn't come close. I wanted to tell you that my son started GHT at the age of 8. Is it better? Well I really wish I could have started earlier but our doctors said " there was nothing that could be done " . Much later we were offered the GHT. Adam is growing at a much faster rate than he ever did without it. His curve of growth had a huge spike after 3 months on GHT. Would he have been taller now if we had started earlier? Most definitely. But at least he is growing now and now that he is 11 1/2 years old (just found out my number two is shot too!!)anyway, his self esteem needed this " shot " . Guest guest
Jenni, My girls didn't start until they were almost 10 1/2, we had insurance issues and then the FDA approved it for kids who were SGA with no catch-up and BINGO, got it. Of course now I fight with them every six months, but that is another story. Alyssa and have been on it for 2 1/2 years now, they are turning 13 in May. They are so used to it, they know without it they would not be growing, their catch-up has been incredible. They went from growing about 1 - 1 1/2 inches a year to about 4 inches per year! (and the insurance co. says no evidence that it is helping!!). We talked about it and presented it to them that their body needed this to continue growing and they accepted it. We did " bribe " them that they did get game boys after the first month of shots (they had to be cooperative about it). They also got a new beanie kid they really wanted the day we started, gave it to them when the nurse came to teach us, they ate it up!! If she has any questions that she would like the girls to answer, you can email them to me and the girls will answer. Good luck, Eileen Mom to Alyssa and 5/26/91 both RSS, both GHT > > > Hello Jenni, > > > My daughter Maartje started GHT three years ago. She was 8 years > > and 6 > > > months. Guest guest
Hi , Your girls' birthday is the same as mine, just 30 years later. They are also near the same age as my son (06/11/1991). Can you give me recent stats on their growth? My Colby is 57 inches and 75 pounds. I just wanted a quick check. He refuses to do the growth the hormone much less Periactin. As a matter of fact he recently informed me that discussing his weight or height is off limits for the rest of his life. He will deal with whatever he was born with and I am not to bring it up anymore. Guest guest
, Don't worry about renaming me! My mother does it all the time! Last time they went to the endo (in February) was 57 pounds and Alyssa 63. is 55 inches and Alyssa 56 3/4. So Colby is a bit taller, and much heavier. I didn't really give them a choice about the GHT. I just told them we were going to do it since they were not growing without it. My goal was to get them to 5 feet (60 inches) and then I will give them the choice. But they really don't mind it,and love the fact that they are not longer substantially smaller than the other (shorter) kids in school. They have never been on Periactin, and Alyssa actually has a decent appetite now. on the other hand, hardly eats (except for pretzels and chocolate) and I set my expectations much lower for her. I give them Boost Plus at bedtime most nights (do skip if they ate very late) and at times allow Alyssa to skip it. On a camp trip, when the kids asked why she was drinking it, Alyssa replied " If you were as skinny as I am, your mom would make you drink it too " ! Quick thinking! The problem is that I would take Alyssa off it more often, but being twins, then rebels and often it is easier just to keep the same routine for both of them. Hope this helps. Keep in touch. I finally met in person another RSS child, but she is not doing much for him at the moment but being followed. (Long story).
