i've left jenna (my oldest) with my parents since she was a few weeks

old.... she was five months old and we left her for ten days... we've

only left both kids at the same time once with my parents for five days

over christmas, but have plans to do it twice this summer for ten days

each time. i find the first couple of hours quite rough, all i want to

talk about is them... but if i keep myself busy, i'm ok. it was harder

when they nursed full time, but now naomi will just drink milk from a

sippy cup if i'm not around so that makes it easier on both of us...

i just tell myself that there are times that i need time to myself and i

really do feel refreshed when i get them back... so yes, even though i

miss them a lot, i still have fun (especially since i know they are safe

and having a blast themselves).

Hi .

My husband and I went to Cancun this past October for our 10th

anniversary. No Kids!!! We were away from the kids for a total of 9

days. That was too long. You miss them terribley, but somehow you

easily forget about it when you are sitting at the beach with a margarita

on the rocks and the best view. I was okay until the end of the week. You

will have a great time!!!

I've had to leave my boy twice now. The first time he was only 2 1/2

months old...the second time he was almost 3 months old.

I was only gone for 3 nights at a time, but I took it as an

opportunity for me to relax, get a good night of sleep, and come back

refreshed and ready to be the best mom I can be.

I mostly felt bad for my husband, who was home alone with him,

because he was going to be completely sleep deprived. But, I have to

say, it was great when I got home. Aleksander started sleeping

through the night, and now is able to calm him down just as

well as I can when he's cranky.

Take complete advantage of your time away, and don't feel bad at

all. This is your chance to have a break, and you'll come back

refreshed and with renewed appreciation for how wonderful your baby

is.

I am a cruise travel agent, so I can answer this EXACT question since

we go on 3-4 cruises a year. We left our first daughter (non-CF) home

once becuase she was only 5 months old and it was a free cruise where

I could only bring one guest. I chose my wife!... but it was tough

leaving our daughter with my parents. Some parents rent satellite

phones if you REALLY want to be in constant 24/7 audio communication.

Otherwise, the QM2 has an internet cafe and Wi-Fi access if you want

to bring a laptop. I find that instant messaging from a ship seems to

be like being home anyway. You can check in anytime and it is

real-time 24/7. By next year there will be cell-towers on many ships

where you have access from your own cellphone and even in the middle

of the ocean. Great for parents in our situation and bad for people

calling their friends and talking loudly in public about the weather

just because they can :-)

Most of the time though we bring our daughter along. Ships cater now

to all ages, where it used to be 3 and up. A good example is Royal

Caribbean who have come out with a Fisher Price program for the 6month

- 2 year old passengers. You are right that the QM2 isn't the most

kids friendly for infants. They have excellent facilities and there is

plenty to do for older kids. The Planetarium is very cool and the only

thing older kids want to do anyway is sit in hot tubs/pools, watch

movies and eat free room service (or the buffet) ;-)

I will be in your exact situation in August. My wife and I are going

on a European cruise to Italy/France/Spain and leaving our 5 year old

and our 6 month old CF daugter with my parents. Yes....once again a

discounted trip and only good for two! We couldn't pass it up since it

is our 10th wedding anniv. and a great deal, but we will be on the

other side of the world worrying the whole time. I'm betting I'll

email my mother about 20 times a day from the ship and telling her

constantly that no matter how much Rachael (our daughter) may " look

unhappy " to NOT TAKE THE BAR SHOES OFF under any circumstances!!!!

You can also look into GSM cell phones where you only pay slight

roaming charges in foreign ports....you can also look into pre-paid

calling cards.

Anyway...probably more information than you needed but I've been

there before and will be there again. In the end it works out

fine...go to the Canyon Ranch Spa for a long masage and you'll be fine :-)

Hi

I have only been home for a week. We left our two babies 2 years 3 months and

10 months old.

We left them in Australia and visited California and NY for 2 weeks. Out of the

14 nights away, I think I cried for about 5 minutes for 8 of those 14 nights.

The rest of the time we were busy and didn't really get an opportunity to miss

them. You will also be busy with lots of activities. I made a little photo album

with favourite photos. My husband would get a little annoyed with me because I

would normally get upset while we were at a restaurant waiting for our meals, he

said people would stare at us as if we were fighting. This is sad, but on the

flight over I actually got upset because I felt I should be at home washing

bottles and trying to put the baby to sleep. I was having baby withdrawals and

could sniff babies a mile away to make goofy faces at.

I say go and enjoy your special time with your eldest son. He will think he is

extra special having mummy all to himself. It's only a week, your baby is 14

months old and will be surrounded by people he loves and who love him even more.

,

Thanks for the info! We try and cruise once a year but you have it made

with 3-4 times!!! I guess those are the perks of your profession. I am

going to bring my laptop so I think the emailing will make me feel better

about this whole situation. Let me ask you something about the QM2. I have

been reading about it but I can't seem to find the part about the pools?

Are there really 5 like I have heard? We prefer RCCL or Celebrity also but

figured this would be a nice change of pace.

I feel much better about this thanks to this board. I really needed to hear

(even though I know) that people have gone away without their kids.

Thank you everyone!

It's okay, I acutally enjoyed all of those tips because I've only

spent two nights away since my eight-year-old was born! You actually

got me thinking on the side though that maybe I can do it some day!
