Guest guest
Robin, I had it done as it is a test of genetic markers, minimally invasive (blood draw) and can tell you many things. Some are come back positive when there is nothing wrong, so if it shows a problem, it doesn't necessarility mean there will be one at birth. Mine came back normal (with a very low probablility of having a problem), the US checking the nucal thickness was normal and yes, the baby was normal at birth. I declined the amnio and CVS testing as well. I decided to turn it over to the Lord and He made everything beautiful and perfect on my baby boy! Guest guest
I rejected the AFP at 18 weeks because I knew I would be having an ultrasound at 20 weeks that would likely let us know if something was amiss. I decided that I didn't want to get the results of the AFT a week before my US and have them indicate something was wrong and be stressed unnecessarily. The two weeks wait without concern was worth it for me. Toi
Guest guest
I didn't want to AFP test b/c of so many false nagatives. But after my doctor talked to me, i went ahead with it. All turned out ok. i was so realived. i was concerned that if something came back, that i would worry the rest of the pregnancy about the baby and problems.....and it may be all for nothing (if ithe test was wrong). But i had it done before wls and after and had fine results...all normal. I have heard that wls patients have a higher chance of bloodwork being wrong due to our body changes. But it is up to you what you feel is best. Best of luck! Sharon in Ga
Guest guest
Hi Robin, I had the special u/s (nuchal lucency) which was very normal. When I saw the geneticist, he highly recommended that we NOT do the AFP testing. Because the u/s is so accurate, my chances of genetic problems based on age alone were 1/3000 or something like that...yet the chance of false positives on the afp blood work are tons tons higher. In fact, in his practice here in Calgary (major canadian city...you may have heard of a little team called the Flames? lol), he has not done an afp in two yrs....That is how advanced the u/s is. If there had been a problem in the u/s, he would have recommended an amnio, but again, the chances of miscarriage with an amnio (1/200)are soooooo much higher than what the u/s risk was, so we are definitely not needing the amnio... And this coming from me, an anal retentive pediatric nurse who has seen every ailment and genetic problem over the past 12 yrs...I feel safe and confident in the results of the u/s... Good luck, Robin, EDC Nov 10 > Robin, > I had it done as it is a test of genetic markers, minimally invasive > (blood draw) and can tell you many things.
