Guest guest
The Autism Research Institute has an article on this topic. According to the author, at one time parents with better paying jobs seemed to have a higher rate of autism among their kids. The author believes that was due to more medical intervention in terms of antibiotics and vaccinations. That income/education/race differential has ended now that vax & antibiotics are given out so readily to all children and at such an early age. But something else I've seen is that lower income, rural people don't have access to qualified professionals to diagnose their kids. I've personally seen kids that I could swear are autistic, but the parents are told it's due to poor parenting. They get scared of CPS and pretend there's no problem. When the kids reach school age, they are dx'd ADHD, emotionally impaired and/or MR. Just my 2 cents, > I also wonder if the people who are " educated " are the ones who tend to have > better jobs and therefore, health insurance--we tend to be up to date on our > vaccinations and feel they are important --its what educated people do for > their children--isnt that what we thought. > Re: To H Re: Henry Winkler Vaccinations > > > > In a message dated 4/22/01 10:50:05 AM Eastern Standard Time, > harder@p... > > writes: > > > > > > > I understand that parents of autistic kids tend to be professionals, > highly > > > intelligent, and often have college degrees or better. Guest guest
So sad about the rural/low income people! We are by no means rich, but are prepared to use every cent we have and can get our hands on to help treat . We live in the wine country and there is a large Hispanic population, some of whom are pretty low income. I have often wondered how they fare up against our local school system! We're having to fight pretty hard to get a good therapy program set up for ...and that includes advocates and lawyers! How on earth do others manage with so little resources?! Well, we've gotten pretty far off topic! Sorry fellow list mates! ) H, mom to 3 yrs, PDD; and 23 months
Guest guest
My guess would be that they are left completely at the hands of the schools. And I would guess children like ours would be put in different ld classes and programs, without any real investigation into the cause of the difficulty. I wonder how many of the kids in the emotionally handicapped classes could be helped with diet and supplements! Then there's the mentally challenged group (severe, moderate, mild). Let alone the different types of ld's that allow the child to remain in the " normal " classes and send them out for special help throughout the day. The parents would assume that their child was accurately evaluated by trained specialist in this field (since that's what they've been told). And I would also guess that the school would insist on a medication to make the child more compliant. So these children are then out of sight, and out of mind, and no one is the wiser. (guess I sound kinda bitter?) Lolita >So sad about the rural/low income people! We are by no means rich, but >are prepared to use every cent we have and can get our hands on to help >treat .
