Guest guest
My son (5 yrs, 7 mo) has an Asperger's dx and is getting very close to not qualifying for his diagnosis thanks to a significant degree to the GFCF diet. He has been on the diet for 13 months. I can't tell you exactly what gains came from the gluten as we went GFCF on the same day. I do not that we tested for food allergies and gluten did come up as an issue. The gains experienced from this diet - GFCF and he has many other allergies, e.g. soy, corn, beans, phenols, etc. - are extensive. Specifically autistic-type behaviors increase when there are dietary infractions. Areas where gains have been noted include: - better balance, coordination - MUCH less sensory issues including less of a need - in fact, I believe this has been extinguished - to put things in his mouth, e.g. necks of shirts, etc. - significantly more socially reciprocal - MUCH more calm; MUCH less irritable - no more MELTDOWNS - less hyperactive - much more attentive to tasks - perseverative behaviors - including verbage - eliminated. That list is probably most of the biggies although I know that there are many other subtle ones. BIG FAT HUGE difference here. Guest guest
My son's been on the diet almost a year, and some days we think it's working, other days we don't. This summer we are going to try a challenge and see what happens. Aspergers? Guest guest
Autism, PDD, Aspergers, ADD, ADHD, Sensory Integration Disorder... They're all part of one big spectrum. GFCF will help most. My very high functioning daughter said her head no longer felt " icky " when we removed gluten - she was already off casein at the time. Big change. Guest guest
Joyce, My son was 9 and a half when we started this diet 2 years ago. He is an extremely birght little aspie, but he used to make us crazy with his tantrums and inflexibility, his relentless obessions, his lack of awareness, etc. We noticed dramatic improvements within 2 days of going casein free. A month later we instituted the much more difficult effort of eliminating gluten also, and endured some real ups and downs with the withdrawal. The inevitable infractions resulted in horrific regressions and served to further convince us of the effectiveness of the GFCF diet. We now have an " almost normal " eleven year old who is fully mainstreamed, except for math, his weakness. OK, he's still socially clueless, and anyone who knew what to look for could pick him out in a crowd as being autistic, but I can't remember the last time we had a tantrum, his eye contact is pretty good, he tries to socialize, he makes great effort to please, his obessions have lightened up considerably, and he is far more flexible and reasonable. This diet has saved his life. It is hard, but I would do it if it were ten times harder. It's worth it! Best wishes- in FL >I'm still wondering how many who are Aspergers found the GFCF helped? How long have you been on the GFCF? what did it help? thanks - still wondering what I can gain from the Gluten free; it's a big change for us;
