How to keep bread from splitting?

When I make a french bread loaf, and to a lesser degree even buns my

bread always splits on top. Not in a nice neat way but many times

half of it is very split and half of it not at all. This makes it

very hard to cut it in half (lengthwise) and have what resembles a

usable piece of french bread or a bun. I use the Karyn Seroussi

recipie and my loaves come out fine. Just the problem with other

bread products. Any ideas greatly appreciated! Thanks, Meggie

Do you make any slices on top of the bread before you bake it? That might help.
