However, I still don't understand atrophy and have a hard time finding information on it. ALL 3 of my muscle biopsies show atrophy type II, but my EMG's are normal and my neurological exams are always normal..after 10 yrs..is this possible with mito and atrophy? Can't deny the atrophy with it being in the biopsy, but can't understand why the emg's and neuro exams are normal. My family dr. thinks I have mixed connective tissue disease. Thanks Again, , I have had the same problem as you for the last 2 1/2 years. My muscle weakness is getting worse, however, but due to the great amount of physical exercise I got for so many years I am stronger than the average 55 year old female. BUT I know I am weaker than I normally have been. Am due for my first open muscle biopsy. Docs could not figure out the problem for quite some time. I think that it has been around for years but I just " muscled " my way thorough the pain and fatique putting it down to motherhood, job and kid activities. Guest guest
You can have atrophy of individual muscle fibers and there can still be lots of normal muscle fibers to do the job. A muscle fiber is seen under an electron or high power microscope, so the fibers are small. I had normal EMGs for years and then they became abnormal. Since being on the supplements, they have returned to normal for the most part. Often, single fiber EMGs can pick up abnormalities or after exercise. My neurological exams are normal for the most part. When we do the testing, there is enough energy, but it quickly fads. Since there is enough energy in each muscle group that is tested, just because the tested muscle group has used up its energy, the others haven't. Parts of the neuro exams are testing co-ordination, nerve conduction and reflexes, etc. Muscle testing is just a small part. My reflexes can be normal one day, brisk another and absent another time - I'm guessing it is a metabolic thing. Just what I have gathered myself, since I'm not a doctor or nurse. laurie > In a message dated 12/19/2005 9:08:46 AM Eastern Standard Time, > writes: > > Message: 4 > Date: Mon, 19 Dec 2005 03:00:17 -0000 > > Subject: Re: Atrophy > > Thank you for your response on this....it does help. > > However, I still don't understand atrophy and have a hard time finding > information on it.
