Facing Reality

Today my husband and I had to make a really difficult decision, but

we think it is going to be best for Max and his education.

Max has not made it through a full day of school for the two weeks

since he was in the hospital. He is nauseous, throwing up, weak, in

pain or something. Today he mistakenly took a full pill of Klonopin

and was so out of it that he had to come home almost as soon as he

got to school. He slept for hours.

Because of all the absences and the anxiety he has because of

missing so much school, we decided to implement an option that we,

fortunately, had put into his IEP. Max is going to go to school for

only two hours each morning, or four class periods, whichever is

longer, and then have home instruction in the afternoons when school

gets out for the day. At least this way Max won't feel overwhelmed

by thinking he has to make it through 7 hours and even if he does

not feel well, he can know that he only has to go for a couple and

then he can go home.

This was such a hard realization to come to. It hurts, too. We

have to face the fact that we have a chronically ill child who just

cannot cope for now. We've pushed and pushed, but it did not work,

so we must face up to the truth. We can only hope that in time he

will become stronger and be able to function more independently.

As an aside, I have contacted Max's GI to ask him if he thinks Max

could have this H Pylori infection again. He's had it a few times

and been quite sick and in pain from it. He has all the signs.

I'll let you know what he says.

I just keep taking life one day, sometimes one hour, at a time. Oh -

I DO have GOOD news! The budget passed in the town where I teach,

so it looks like I will have a full-time teaching job next year!

Jodi I am so sorry to hear about Max being sick. Sometimes just cutting out

some of the stress helps. I am thrilled to hear about your new job coming

around the corner that is so great! I will continue to keep your family in our

prayers!

Hi Jodi,

I am sorry to hear that you had to invoke that option. However, in

the end it seems like it the best decision you could possibly make at

this time.

How in the world did you think of this in advance to have it put in

his IEP?

Please let Max know that we are thinking of him and take some time

for yourself.

Congratulations on the good news for next year.
