I too have had arrythmias most of my adult life. i have always been

told they are not life threatening. They seem undercontrol at times and

go crazy at others.I did take a beta blocker at one time, but it made

my pulse go so low I could hardly function. My pulse is quite low when

it is not racing. since the death of my nephew last month, I have had 4

very bad episodes of racing, in which I thought I would have to go to

the hospital. My dr. wants me to take toporol. I know some of you take

this medicatio. i would like to know if you have had any side effects,

if it works well for you, how much do you take and any other info you

can give.i am very nervous to start the meds. I know the added stress

is causing alot of this, but it won't be leaving anytime soon. Thanks

Hi, Carmen

I take Toprol XL 50 mg a day for hypertension. I have been observing

closely, and I do not think I have any bad side-effects, and I tried to

check to be sure it was not the list of meds not good for mito

patients. BUT, I have to tell you that my pulse always has gone from a

little high to middle high, and the Toprol HAS lowered it somewhat.

Let me give you numbers - at its lowest, my resting pulse could be in

the middle 80's, and now it might be in the middle 70's. I do not

know what effect Toprol XL could have on your pulse, but a few

additional thoughts: make sure you get the XL which is the extended

release, which will keep you from getting too much at once; understand

that once you are on it you must taper off it, you can't stop it all at

once (part of the drug info given by the pharmacy, etc, as well as the

doctor, I am sure); finally, if it makes sense to you, I would suggest

asking for a very low dose first, and see what happens. My doctor

started me on 25 mg, and moved up to 50mg after a month, while tapering

me off another antihypertension med. But, hypertension is a different

problem than a racing pulse and arrythmia- please keep in mind I am

only sharing my experience as I take it for hypertension.

I was very sorry to hear about the death of your nephew last month, and

I hope you sister and your family will find peace eventually. At that

time others gave some good support resources and I hope you will find

help in some of them. Be patient with yourself and have confidence in

yourself that you can regain control and find meaning in life again.

Know you have people wishing you well.

I had horrible side effects from Toporal XL and had to stop it. I did

not have terrible high blood pressure, so I don't know if they may have

also had something to do with it, but after telling my cardiologist

about the side effects, he told me that toporal was not for me. I know

some with mito have had problems with extended release medication in

general because a lot of us don't metabolize meds at the same rate as

non-mito folks do so we don't get the gradual release of the med like we

should.

Hi,

Thank you for the comment on extended release medication. That is a

good thing to keep in mind when looking at alternatives. I have been

leary of beta blockers, and was pleasantly surprised that the Toprol

seemed to agree with me. I had been on a different group of meds 5

years ago, including another beta blocker, that did not agree with me,

so I was really worried. If it is not too much trouble and you still

remember the details (and yes, we do try to forget, don't we

sometimes,) could you tell me what your side-effects were? Information

about possibilities is always good to have. And, I do NOT

automatically get the side effects just because I know about them, much

as some doctors think patients do that. lol

Regards

Sunny

Carmen,

I've been on toprol xl - 50 mg daily for well over a year now for

tachycardia episodes.

I have not had any negative side effects to the drug. My blood pressure was

normal prior to starting toprol and the drug has not affected it.

My doc told me I may continue to experience small/milder episodes and I

have. They usually happen occasionally and last only a few minutes and are

nothing like what I was living with. He also told me that the drug may not

work forever.

Given the frequency and severity of the episodes I was having and the

residual weakness/exhaustion I dealt with afterwards, this med has been a

blessing for me.

If you make the decision to try it I hope you have similar good results.

So very sorry about your nephew.

Hugs,

Marie

Sunny,

I would love to, but just as you mentioned, I have forgotten. There

isn't enough memory left in the old brain to remember things like that.

Sorry. I even had a word file until recently with the side effects

listed and deleted it over the Christmas holiday because I was trying to

free up hard drive space.

I can remember I will let you know, but I wouldn't hold my breath if I

were you. :-D
