Guest guest
Well, yesterday we had our appointment with the local school district to determine placement etc for both children for next year. Next year will be their second year in CPSE. It will be their final year in preschool before beginning kindgergarden. As expected, both children qualified for the summer school program and the special preschool program for next year. will continue in an integrated class (1/2 special needs 1/2 not special needs) and will receive PT and OT. She tested out of speech by a tremendous amount which we expected and we are ok with. The preschool recommended and the school district approved a neuropsych evaluation for Becca. She is mouthing everything, and whines and cries for no reason. She appears to be anxious about things that she expects to happen. Her speech therapist recommended play therapy, but that can't be approved until after the evaluation which should take place shortly. After that, we will need another meeting with the school district, but I think I will handle that by conference call and let my husband attend in person (I commute and he works locally). As for , he will continue in a segragated class. I had hoped for him to transition to an integrated class, but he just isn't ready. He is finally starting to interact with the other children instead of engaging in solitary play, but this is a very recently emerging skill. In addition, he is very defiant and will not follow the school routine. Therefore, they cannot shift his class. He will continue to receive PT, OT and speech. The only problem that I had, was I requested 1 additional speech session outside of school (so as not to pull him from the classroom any more than he is already pulled) and since the speech therapist didn't put this in her report, I didn't get it. 's speech therapist is now out on maternity, but he is working with Becca's and if we wait a month and she recommends this (and she will) the school district will approve it. It does mean another meeting first though. We also spoke briefly about kindergarden. Our local elementary school does not have a special ed segregated program. They only have an inclusion program. They believe they will be able to accomadate Becca, but is another story. It really depends on how he does between now and next Spring. If not, they have an agreement with the school district next door to us (an extra 5 minutes from our house) who has a special ed program. I have heard wonderful things about it, so I will not worry about this until next January. I did ask if there was additional therapy we should be looking at since there is a real possibility of ADD (inattentive, not hyperactive) and was told that since is already in a very structured program the best thing to do was become more structured at home and stick to our guns regarding limits. Jodi - do you have anything else we should be doing?
