Guest guest
The Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America (POSNA) is having it's annual Convention on May 11-15, 2005 in Ottawa, Canada. It is interesting that 5 of the 7 papers are on non-surgical methods of treatment. The papers also include 4 of 7 with information on the Ponseti method. In a number of prior studies, the Ponseti " non-surgical " method has been shown to be effective for almost all children with regular clubfoot. A major recent Ponseti method study was published a year ago in the Journal of Pediatrics at http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/cgi/content/abstract/113/2/376 A year or two ago, a study on the effectiveness of the Ponseti method for Arthrogrypotic clubfoot was released. This year, 2 studies focus on the use of the Ponseti method for other more difficult types of clubfoot; verticle talus and syndromic feet in Myelodysplasia [spina bifida]. The following are all of the clubfoot related medical study papers being presented at that meeting. 7:36 am - 7:40 am 30 A Prospective, Randomized, Double-Blind Study of the Usefulness of Botox as an Adjunct to Serial Manipulation and Casting for Cogenital Clubfeet R Jay Cummings, MD (n); Shanks, MD (n) [i believe that Dr. Cummings is from Delaware] 7:41 am - 7:45 am 31 Gait Analysis of Children Treated Non-Operatively for Clubfoot: Physical Therapy versus Ponseti Casting LA Karol, MD (n); R El-Hawary, MD (n); K Jeans, MS (n); BS s, MD (n) [These doctors are from Texas ish Rite Hospital in Dallas] 7:46 am - 7:50 am 32 Clubfoot Relapses after Correction with the Ponseti Method A Morcuende, MD, PhD (n); Lovell, MS (n); Lori Dolan, PhD (n); Ignacio Ponseti, MD (n); Fred Dietz, MD (n) [univerity of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics] 7:51 am - 7:55 am 33 Use of the Ponseti Method for the Treatment of Clubfoot Associated with Myelodysplasia [spina Bifida] B Dobbs, MD (n); Morcuende, MD, PhD (n); Ignacio Ponseti (n) [shriners in St. Louis and Univerisity of Iowa] 7:56 am - 8:08 am Discussion 8:09 am - 8:13 34 Bilateral Cavovarus Feet and Their Relationship to Charcot-Marie- Tooth Disease T Guille, MD (n); Gilbert Chan, MD (n); Nagai, MD, PhD (n) 8:14 am - 8:18 am 35 Cast Correction of Congenital Vertical Talus in Twenty-Seven Consecutive Feet B Dobbs, MD (n); Morcuende, MD, PhD (n) [shriners in St. Louis and University of Iowa] 8:19 am - 8:23 am 36 Dorsal Bunion Deformity Following Clubfoot Release A , MD (n); Ken Kuo, MD (n) [Primary Children's Medical Center in SLC, Utah and Shriners in Chicago] http://www.posna.org/index?service=page/scientificProgram2005 Last November 2004, the POSNA web site finally posted a link in their Patients Information Section on the Clubfoot that included reference to the Ponseti method. They stated, " Over the past 5 to 10 years, more and more success has been achieved in correcting clubfeet without the need for surgery. A particular method of stretching and casting, known as the Ponseti method, has been responsible for this. " http://www.orthoinfo.org/fact/thr_report.cfm? Thread_ID=161&topcategory=Children POSNA also provides this explanation of Clubfoot in it's CORE cirriculum series which has been then for 2-3 years. http://www.posna.org/resources/coreCurriculum/pdf/clubfootInfant.pdf and (3-17-99) http://www.vh.org/pediatric/patient/orthopaedics/clubfeet/egbert.html
