Guest guest
Hello, I am new to this board. I have been on the yahoo clubfoot message board and was recommended to join you all as well! We are 35 weeks pregnant and our daughter is said to have bilateral clubfeet. The doctors think it's a result of amniotic bands. Have any of you dealt with this before? I would love to hear any info you may have. Thanks!
Guest guest
Hi ! Welcome to the board! My daughter Ava is 8 months (today! Yeah!) and has a right club foot and amniotic banding. Her bands were/are very mild: she has a partial banding or crease on her right leg, about halfway up the calf, and some light bands on her bicep and forearm (both right side). Have you done any research on ABS? If not I'd be glad to share what I've found. Just let me know! Again, welcome, and I know you'll love this board! The people here are great! , mommy of: Guinevere, on, Ava 8/4/04 RCF ABS DBB 18/7 > > > Hello, I am new to this board. Guest guest
- Welcome to the group and congratulations. Our son was born 7 months ago and much to our surprise, he had bilateral club feet. After conferring with the doctors-they decided it was due to ABS. His right side has been affected by ABS-he was born with a band around his index finger, 2 bands around his right wrist, and a shortened right thumb-it was cut off at the joint. His right/left feet also have shortened toes and he is missing his right big toe. Our doctor told us if we wanted to we could name his condition the " " condition. oncouldn't tell the difference-he uses both hands as if they were both normal-sucks on both thumbs-and loves to eat his tootsies. We will be having surgery this summer to release the bands on his wrist/index finger. After seeing all that can go wrong with an ABS affected baby- ie miscarriage or total limb loss-I am grateful that this is all we are dealing with. Our doctors have been most helpful-we go to Riley's Childrens hospital in Indy. Hope this information helps! Feel free to ask questions! Guest guest
Can you give me an abbreviated layman's description of what ABS is? thanks, s. Guest guest
Okay, basically there are 2 layers to the amniotic sac (the sac that's in your uterus that the baby & water are in): outer layer (chorion) and inner layer (amnion). For some unknown reason, the inner layer (amnion) ruptures. The outer layer is generally still intact, so there may be little to no leakage of water. But sticky fibrous strands of the amnion begin to float around in the waters with the baby, and can get wrapped around different parts of the baby. Depending on where they wrap, and how tightly they wrap, you can have amputation, missing or webbed fingers & toes, cleft palate/lip, etc. 80-90% of babies with amniotic banding syndrome (ABS) have hand & finger malformations, and 30% have club foot/feet. Sorry if that's longer than you wanted! , mommy of: Guinevere, on, Ava RCF ABS DBB 18/7 > > > > > > Hello, I am new to this board. Guest guest
Thank you for the information - but here's another question. If 30% of ABS babies have cf, is that to say 30% of the total cf cases are caused by ABS? Is the band visible when the baby is born? s. Guest guest
Okay, that's like one of those crazy SAT questions...if all fizzles are foops, and 30% of foops are gloops, are 30% of fizzles gloops? hehehe... Anyway, I'm not sure about the percentages going both ways. I don't think so, though. I'm still not really clear on why there's such a relationship between CF & ABS. As for the band being visible...apparently sometimes it still is, either wrapped around the baby or even in the water. That wasn't the case with Ava's bands. It almost looks like a new scar, like a pink line, but it's pulled tight, like she has an invisible rubber band around her leg & arm. > Thank you for the information - but here's another question. Guest guest
Thank you . Did you know before Ava was born that she had ABS? We know for sure that her feet are clubbed and there is a question about her left hand right now. I am sure I will have many questions once she is born (three to four weeks!)How big are the creases (or I should say, how noticeable are they?) Thanks for your help! Guest guest
, We didn't know about Ava's CF or ABS before she was born. Do they think Isabella's hand is clubbed also? (By the way...love the name! My niece is named Isabella. Are you going to call her Bella?) Ava's creases...well, it's really hard to say. The one on her leg is *kind of* deep, but not really that noticable, because she's really FAT!!! :-) The same with the ones on her arm. They just look like extra fat rolls, if you know what I mean. Someone just looking at her would think that's what the creases were. So it remains to be seen what they'll look like when she gets older and thins out some. I had sent a pic to CF Pics before of the crease in her leg, if you'd like I can send it to you also so you can see what it looks like. It's only partial on her leg, and mostly around the back. , mommy of: Guinevere, on, Ava 8/4/04 RCF ABS FAB 18/7 <---oops! almost wrote " DBB " >:-[ > > > > > > > > > Hello, I am new to this board. Guest guest
Pretty much like extra deep fat rolls...you know? Like the typical fat rolls any baby has, but a bit deeper, and kind of like a red/pink line in them. And they're in odd spots--not places where a baby would normally get a fat roll. That's why we know they're bands, not fat. , mommy of: Guinevere, on (who is 3 today!), Ava 8/4/04 RCF ABS FAB 18/7 > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hello, I am new to this board.
