I don't have alot to offer except that I had the lumbar puncture a couple of years ago.( they were trying to rule out MS) The procedure itself was almost painless but I ended up with a spinal headache. As a nurse, I have taken care of patients with this but had no idea how painful it was.I was told by an anestheologist friend that typically the radiologists who do lumbar punctures use a larger bore needle than the anestheologists do. I ended up with a blood patch after 4 days of being very sick. I am not telling you this to scare you - just fyi in case you have to have it done - that maybe they won't use a large bore needle. I hope you get some answers soon. The MRI diagnosed a nonspecific myelopathy with a differential diagnosis of a demylinating disease. It also mentioned the possibility of artifact; however, previous MRI done in 2002 did not show what this one did. My neuro exam and symptoms back up the MRI findings. Doc says presentation is similar to MS but she has seen this in Mito patients before. She feels we need to rule whether this is truly MS or Mito progression. MDA Neuro has given me scripts for a large number of labs and has requested I have an EMG and evoked potentials as well as an EEG and I can't remember what else at the moment. She also gave me orders for a Lumbar Puncture to hold onto. She would like to have all the other tests done first. If there is anyone who has similar findings or experience I would greatly appreciate any advice you could give. Thanks for reading.
