Guest guest
Claire is in size 8 (narrow) Markells.. has been for about a year.. we got them in Iowa. With the open toe they last a long time. (she wears a larger size in regular shoes.) I've realized that she won't need a larger pair .. we're only a couple months away from the end of wear, and her toes aren't even off the edge.. hanging in for the 5th b-day, not long from now.. can't believe it.. and Claire born 6/29/00, left cf treated by Dr. P > I have heard that they go up to that size in the open toe now, but we've > yet to see them...the local orthotist has been ordering bigger sizes > since last year and nothing bigger than a size 5 has been supplied by > Markell so far. Guest guest
, I don't know if anyone has responded this yet but just an FYI, the Markell's style 1644 go up to a size 6 or 6½ and then size 7 and up to 8½ (I think) are available but the style number is different (2544 or 2644 or something similar). The size 7s and 8s are style number 2644, which is a different number (I hadn't noticed that before.) But the style is the same.. open toe, straight last, strap, padded heel, etc.. just like the smaller sizes. I can't see a difference. , you could probably order them through American Prosthetics and Orthotics at the Hospital in Iowa, couldn't you? Since was a patient there? That's how I've always gotten the shoes.. either picking them up when I'm there, or by ordering over the phone with a credit card, and they mail them to me. Guest guest
, it might be worthwhile sending an email to Jay (MarkellShoe @ earthlink.net) and asking him to give you the exact style number(s) for the larger sized tarso open-toed straight last boots. I do know for certain that the style number is different above size 6½ - my orthotist pointed it out when we went through the Markell catalogue. You might also want to mention to Jay the difficulty that your local orthotist is having in obtaining these larger sizes. I know that we had a difficult time getting our last pair (size 6's). The order was made in January and at first they were on backorder. The backorder came in February...it wasn't until I got down to the orthotists office to get them that we discovered that they were the wrong ones (the ones that were sent were close toed tan coloured boots). It was close to the end of March by the time I got the size 6's!. Good luck! Guest guest
, Hi there, hey I was wondering if you have had any conversations with Dr. Ponseti regarding brace wear beyond 5 years of age. Was 5 the magic number for you guys too for coming out of the brace or did you decide yourself to wait longer (until 5) and Dr. Ponseti agreed it would be a good thing? I am still waiting and watching 's feet. She looks good still, although I do still notice a little pigeon toed left foot here and there. My husband disagrees with me and thinks it's her whole foot, not the fore foot turning in a little. I am now wondering if it is her foot or a slight turn in her leg bone. I know that sounds strange but I had that when I was born (wore the same shoe braces for it but for a MUCH shorter time) and it really did'nt correct my problem at all, I grew out of it but when I am at rest, my feet still like to turn toward eachother. Weird huh. Anyway, I am waiting to email Dr. Ponseti and make an appointment for sometime in May. I do excercizes every evening with 's feet, just to try to help keep them limber, don't know if it helps at all, but it makes me feet better. :-) How is Claire these days? Hope you are all well! Guest guest
Hi, Holly! Oh, no.. not past 5. This amount of time has been longer than we expected, but it has been because we were willing, and even pushed for it ourselves, to be on the safe side. it just stretched out over time.. I don't think it was ever in the original plan. At various points, at say maybe age 3, 3 1/2, he had said we could perhaps end the brace, but I was willing/eager to continue, and he was always in agreement. Then, they started seeing a rash of relapses in quite a bit older kids, so he said it would be good for us to continue, since she had a 'difficult' foot. I always made it clear I was willing to go on, since she tolerated it well and I didn't mind. When we were at the symposium last November, when she was 4 1/2, I expected him to say she could stop, but he recommended, in front of all the doctors assembled in the auditorium, another 6 months. We're in the homestretch now. Her birthday is in a couple of months. She has never complained, but she is now aware that at 5 she can stop.. and is speaking of it with excitement.. she sees it as a 'big girl' milestone to be able to stop wearing her " bars " , as she calls it. Wearing the brace has not been a big deal for us.. I have always felt it has been well worth it.. to have the extra insurance and peace of mind. I have gotten very easy-going about it in recent times .. putting it on after she falls asleep for the most part.. and she sometimes takes it off herself in the a.m. She still, though, has amazingly only missed about 3 or 4 nights ever. She's doing very well.. her foot looks wonderful.. and she has great function. I'm glad that is doing well! I can imagine your intense focus on her progress and any changes you think you see. I would be the same.. I hope that you get a great report from Dr. P in May.. and that whatever you are seeing is not anything to be concerned about.. Best wishes.. I'll be eager to hear how your appt. goes! and Claire > > > I have heard that they go up to that size in the open toe now, > but > > we've > > > yet to see them...the local orthotist has been ordering bigger > > sizes > > > since last year and nothing bigger than a size 5 has been > supplied > > by > > > Markell so far. Guest guest
, Thanks for the reply, I found myself shaking my head up and down through your whole post back to me because we are so similar with our thoughts on the brace wear. I did the exact same thing over the remaining few years. We would go for a check up expecting to hear she would be released from the brace and found she would stay in a little longer and at one or two times at our request with Dr. Ponseti saying he felt it would be a good idea also. 's feet were difficult also and she has always tolerated the brace with such ease, I always thanked god for that. When we took them off just 2 1/2 months ago I told her that as long as they stay straight, she does'nt have to wear the brace anymore. She looked at me and said, " well, if they start to not stay straight mommy, I'll just have to put my shoes on again, like Dr. Ponseti said last time. " She has a total understanding of it all on such an innocent level though, it's amazing. Brace wear to us was just like reading a bed time story before bed, just a part of bedtime. I was asking about brace wear after age 5 because I was wondering what Dr. Ponseti would recommend if he thought 's feet were regressing a little, if he would recommend furthur brace wear. I'm also curious about physical therapy at her age to help keep her feet alligned. I have to make an appointment for May, so I'm eager to take her back to Iowa to see him. Talk to you later, I'll definitly keep you posted from what I hear back from him. Guest guest
I completely agree with you here. I have to say that the brace was the key (of course excellent correction was too) but that brace was like gold to us. Especially if a childs feet were difficult to correct. I felt like the only parent at our check ups asking Dr. Ponseti to keep in the brace longer, it was sort of a crutch for me because she did so amazing well in it and as long as she was wearing it at night, her feet stayed perfect and I didn't have to worry. I did of course look forward to the day for her that she didn't have to wear it, but I always had a funny feeling that she needed it longer. We tried to release her on her third birthday but two months later I was asking to put her back in because her feet were turning in a lot after a very short time out of the brace. Dr. Ponseti agreed and in just a few days to a week, her feet were back to perfect. She had outgrown her shoes by that time, but I just put them on that night anyway and emailed Dr. Ponseti our situation the next day and asked for bigger shoes. I'm so glad that he is recommending longer time in the brace now to his patients, I really think it makes a difference. And the time really has flown by with all of it for us, I remember thinking, Oh my god, 4 years for correction! Looking back now, I am so completely grateful that we did all of this, it was so well worth it!! :-) Holly and > > > > I have heard that they go up to that size in the open toe now, > > but > > > we've > > > > yet to see them...the local orthotist has been ordering bigger > > > sizes > > > > since last year and nothing bigger than a size 5 has been > > supplied > > > by > > > > Markell so far. Guest guest
just a note to an others who are concerned about larger sizes of shoes for the older kids... Our straight last open-toe boots are now, and have been made for the last year or two up to size 9. The sizes 8.5 and 9 are only made in the medium width/fitting, but have been helpful for the children ages 4+ yrs. Just thought you all would like to know... Cheers!
