Her second tenotomy was about a month ago. Today Dr. Schmale said that Livi's right foot (the easy one) had a good 15 degrees dorsiflexion, but the left one (the stiff one) was only getting 5-7 degrees. I'm feeling discouraged - oh how I pushed for the second tenotomy instead of the capsule release - and it sounds to me like it didn't get the results we want at all! It's better than it was beforehand, but it's still not coming up. I'm worried that she still will have issues keeping her shoes on since her left foot isn't coming up like it should. We'll see.... Any advice? Darby Livi 3/15/04 bi cf
Guest guest
From my vague understanding of it, there is some soft tissue behind the achilles tendon that also seems to cause some tightness. THey go in and " release " it which I'm assuming means cutting into it. Doc didn't say we'd need to do it when we saw him today, but when we did the 2nd tenotomy it was advised that if this didn't work we would probably do the release later on. Apparently they would want her to be a bit older before doing it anyhow. She sure did love her bath this morning! Now she's just trying to figure out what to do with these legs she now has!! Guest guest
Darby, Best wishes to Livi, hope everything goes OK.. The only thought I have is that I've heard (from Dr. Morcuende) that sometimes a lower amount of dorsiflexion isn't so terrible .. that kids can work around it.. as long as it's not going into the negative range.. my daughter's isn't the optimum amount, yet she has very good function. Maybe once she's walking it will help .. (Is she cruising when she's not in the brace?) Maybe it's not worth doing anything invasive as long as function is good.. Hope all works out.. > > Livi got her casts off today and is going back in the FAB. Her second > tenotomy was about a month ago. Guest guest
I realize I'm posting very late with this one, but I thought I'd chime in anyway... There was talk of this capsule release for my son also. I emailed Dr. P and he said that it will cause a lot of scar tissue. If it can be avoided, avoid it. I also heard that as long as dorseflexion is at least neutral it's better than in equinus. And if Livi is at 5 to 7 than that's not so bad. -------------- Original message -------------- From my vague understanding of it, there is some soft tissue behind the achilles tendon that also seems to cause some tightness.
