Guest guest
Urgent Legislative update Representative Strauss has filed an amendment to this year’s state budget that mandates the Department of Public Health to initiate a prevalence study. We are asking families to call their Representatives and ask that they support amendment # 746. Budget hearings start Monday 4/30. We have no way of knowing when this amendment will be heard in the House of Representatives. We need to call ASAP. We should continue to call over the next 2 weeks or until the amendment is heard. Recommended Script might be, I am calling to ask that Representative X support amendment #746 sponsored by Strauss. This bill asks the Department of Public Health to conduct a prevalence study in order to begin to understand the rising rates of autism in the state of Massachusetts. Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder it was once thought to be a rare disorder but now it is thought to occur in one out of 500 live births. My daughter was diagnosed at the age of 27 months etc. It is important to share your personal story. Most public officials are really unaware of what autism is or the rising incidence. There are over 400,000 people in this country alone who carry this diagnosis. In order to help plan public policy it is essential that the Department of Public Health address this issue. If you have further questions please contact Sandy Benson, chairperson of the Legislative committee of the Massachusetts Chapter of the Autism Society of America. or sgbenson@...
