Guest guest
Well, I finally decided what to do with my big brain, little body daughter, who will be in kindergarten this August. I found out that there is a charter school in my district that supports and oversees home based education. A teacher comes to the house once a week to grade the work, assess, and set up the next weeks lessons. Each teacher oversees 20 children, there are a few group class meetings, some social occasions, they use the district curriculum but each child has an individual plan where they can work at their own level! That means Destiny can do reading at the 4th grade or whatever she is by then, math at the 1st grade, handwriting at the Kindergarten level, etc. I would be responsible for making sure she does 610 minutes per week of classwork and generally teaching her. I am a single parent but I work at several things that all have fairly flexible hours and I taught and directed preK/Kinder programs for 20 years, so I think I can manage this at least this year. I feel like a great weight has been lifted off my shoulders. Destiny has been insisting that she's not going to Kinder but to first grade, she told her preschool teacher if I took her to Kinder she was going " throw the biggest fit she's (meaning me) ever seen " She told me if she went to kindergarten she guessed she would just have to pretend she didn't know anything. Well I know that socially she's not ready for first grade. She's been in the after school program at her preschool for a year and she's been teased about her size and called a " midget " already. She has other, kinder social settings to develop social skills in, like karate, her library group, and her real friends. Funny thing is in all my discussiond with various people in the district about her unique educational needs, not one person mentioned this possibility. I have three other children, the two that are adults were gifted, my son was labeled " severly gifted " and my third child is artistically talented (although not academically). I am SO tired of pushing and pushing for a better educational situation in the public schools. I'm ready to try something else for my youngest. Wish us luck, I'll keep you posted on the experience.
