Guest guest
Hi Jane, Diarrhea is not an uncommon side effect with the use of polycose. You are giving her an additional 3.32 calories per ounce with the addition of the polycose. (Most infant formulas are 20 cals an ounce). There are better nutritional alternatives to polycose (which is basically sugar) that you may want to explore with a nutritionist. What I have most commonly seen is concentrating the formula slightly first (i.e. making formual to 24 or 26 calories an ounce vs. the standard 20), if still minimal weight gain adding a few more calories an ounce with an oil, and so on. There are many variations. Are you giving the polycose for weight gain or low blood sugars? Please don't adjust anything on your own. Randomly adding things to formulas can be dangerous and must be under the guidance of a nutritionist and/or doctor familiar with the age group and special nutritional needs of . If her diarrhea continues, let your doctor know straight away and say it coincided with the start of polycose. Diarrhea will promote weight loss and cause her to become dehydrated. Can't help you with the addition of polycose to jar foods. However, I did notice jars of baby food by " Beech Nut " with added calories in them. Can't remember exactly what the label said but they were different from their regular line. Some had eggs and cream in them and they tasted good! Not that my daughter Jillie would eat them but I gained weight on them!! Hope this helps. Best wishes, (Mom to Ethan 5 and Jillian (RSS) 2) > > I just started my daughter on polycose per my request. I am wondering how much all you experienced moms have given your children. Right now our Dr. is having us add 1/2 teaspoon to every ounce of formula. Now, it may be coincidental, but today she had some diarrhea - has this happened to any of you? Also I know it can be added to her jar foods - how much? I appreciate any input. Thanks, Jane (mom to " probable RSS " 8 1/2 months 23 1/4 " 11lb 10oz, Aidan 2 nonRSS, Gavin 4 nonRSS).
Guest guest
Jane - ditto what wrote. Polycose is an effective took to be used with nighttime feeds to help prevent noctural hypoglycemia, but if you are using it multiple times during the day for increasing calories, there may be better means. Since you are now a member of MAGIC, call them and ask them for library document #H-68 -- which is a copy of the handouts from the Nutrition/Feeding presentation at last summer's convention. They listed a number of means for increasing formula, etc. > > > > I just started my daughter on polycose per my request.
