Guest guest
I've just begun my three year old son on a dairy free diet, and I've seen no significant changes, although he's not had trouble with aggressive behavior recently (at school). I'm beginning to remove the wheat, and the one question I have is this... is Mayer bologna really gfcf? I found it listed on the gfcf website as being " ok " , but I suppose that I'm really being over cautious. I spoke with oscar mayer directly and they said that the flavorings were just spices, not wheat or dairy in them. I have an issue with nitrites, but I'm saving that for another day. Bubba is very particular, and the only meat I can get him to eat is chicken nuggets, hot dogs or bologna. The shape of food is very important to him. Has anyone else had their child show little reaction to removing dairy, but more of a reaction to removing the gluten? I'm going to give it at least a year, even if I don't see very much improvement. I do notice that his bowel movements are softer, and don't cause him to bleed from the rectum. His D.O. simply gave me a prescription for colase, but I didn't fill it. It's not normal for a three year old to bleed with a bowel movement. He doesn't do it all of the time, just occasionally, and he has really very large movements when he does go. (when he was on the milk, that is). The soy has helped him in this area, so he won't see dairy again! Also, did anyone's child show an improvement in their hunger after removing the wheat and dairy? Bubba's always eaten very little, just drank his milk, but I'm hoping that he will have a better appetite now. Thanks!

Brett was horribly constipated until we removed dairy around his second birthday. Since then his stools have been overly soft, but for us, that's a better alternative. We saw NO behavioral changes being CF alone, but it was worth it to improve the poop situation. Around Brett's 3rd birthday, 3 months ago, we went completely gfcf. The bowels haven't improved any (I've heard it takes up to a year for a normal stool), but his speech has improved dramatically. He went from maybe 10 words that had to be coaxed out of him to about 100 words used spontaneously, and he is getting more verbal every day. He also has been showing a lot more social awareness in the last month or two. The gluten & casein proteins are so similar that many kids don't show improvements until they are both completely removed from their diet. About the bologna- we buy OM beef bologna (which Brett won't eat, but the rest of the family will) and OM beef hot dogs (Brett's favorites). We're going to deal with removing the nitrates at a later date, but for now, I'm just glad to see Brett eating anything. Good luck to you- We're here to help!
