Guest guest
On the school snack front, you can send in stuff that all the kids could share...you could send him in with all his faves...if your teacher is even half willing, she will come around. My guy's (3 1/2 year old) teacher was oblivious when we started, but as the year has progressed, she sends home labels now for me to let her know if something that she got in hopes that can eat it with the class. THat is such a sign of hope. But if you can make sure he has somthing comparable...his own cereal snack if they have cereal, his own cookies for when they do cookies...etc. I send my guy in with a box of Capri Suns rather than the bulk powder mixed juices they buy. The teacher tells us when we're out of anything, and we restock. We've had less than a handful of infractions, and that was early in the process. And they saw the results in his behavior a few days later themselves, so they got more diligent with enforcing it... I understand that the tests will still read okay even if you already started the diet because they hang around for awhile in their systems...I understand gluten hangs around the longest... Congratulations to you!!! Lynn in MD
Guest guest
Don't worry too much about what he eats in the beginning. It seems that most of the kids start out not eating much because it is hard to make such a big transition. You'll figure out the way soon enough. The snack thing. Well there are plenty of snacks you can make which is what I usually do. Cookies, gfcf rice krispies snacks, cupcakes, or little snack packs of Lays potato chips, French's potato sticks, and there are other things. It's very hard at first because all the other kids get to eat what they want but once you get into the diet you'll realize it's all junk and that your child is eating better now. As we all know in this group most of us have a baking day where we get alot of breads and snacks made. You will soon have one too. If you need some recipes for snacks and can't find them in the archives let me know and I will e-mail them to you. Just take it one day at a time. It's overwhelming at first but so well worth it and plus everyone here is always willing to help. MA

I had my son on the diet for the week before I finally saw a DAN doc who was ordering peptide tests. I decided to put him back on milk and gluten for a few days. I noticed an immediate change especially with the milk, he was cranky and really out of sorts. Once the tests were done I put him back GFCF but boy I felt so guilty those few days because I saw what the milk did to him. His casemorphin came back high even with those few days of milk, his gluten came back normal but Im not convinced its not a problem for him. I will also get an IGg to see any wheat sensitivity. My advice is if the diet is going well and you see some changes dont take him off. Within a months time of being on the diet, Jake has made amazing strides. His eye contact and interaction are just amazing. Although I know seeing the results on paper is confirming, but the results are far more convincing. It really depends on when you test for the peptides, if its not for another month or so, dont switch him back. It may take time for the peptides to build back up. Good luck to you, and also ask your doc what he/she thinks about that.

He is over 5 though, and has shown a great deal of understanding that this diet is helping him. I am not limiting as much as you are so the only thing I can say is as soon as you can add something, make it along the snack line that your son will like...The gluten free Panty makes a great brownie and choc. chip cookie mix. I give these to my son when he needs to feel special. I even visited my special swiss choc. store at the mall the other day and he was very good. I told him in advance that we were going but that the choc. had diary and he no longer could have any BUT that I would bring him 2 special brownies to eat while we were there. He was perfectly content. I think sometimes once they realize that they actually feel better compliance is easier. Oh and about the peptide test....all I can say is that both of my children have responded so positively to this diet and then the addition of supps. that I may not pursue testing for peptides. I mean if they are doing better and I can see it why spend the money? I have all the motivation I need just seeing the improvements. The proof is in the pudding so to speak not the numbers.
