Guest guest
Hi, Colin has been on Periactin since last November. He has been on a very low dose and about a month ago it was increased to 4ccs/twice a day based on advice from Dr. H. His Prilosec was also doubled at this time to 14ccs/twice a day. I made the change gradually, but have found Colin to be extremely grumpy/irritable and having lots of temper tantrums that I thought were a thing of the past (he is 3.5). We've seen NO increase in appetite and I'm very tempted to drop it back down again so we can eliminate this behavior. He hasn't gained weight either. He was 30lbs last July, 29 lbs in December and is 28lbs 13oz. 6 months later. What do you think I should do? It just doesn't seem to be helping. I was hoping that this change would be the answer for him and I'm very dissapointed and frustrated. I wish there was another appetite stimulant for our kids without these side effects! Guest guest
Hi again , Is a cc the same as a ml ? We've decided to take Olivia off of the Cyproheptadine (periactin) for the time being as she is almost uncontrollable on it. Won't listen, daydreams, tantrums at everything going on, falls asleep several times in the day, tired when she's awake. If Colin is OK on the lower dose I might just lower it again. It's a very personal decision for us to stop the cyproheptadine right now after only being on it for about 6 weeks, we'll try it again at some point but for us a couple of pounds is not worth giving up quality of life for her (and us! especially her sister! ) Just my 2 cents. Guest guest
Hey - I know this is frustrating. It took a looong time for Dominic to get accustomed to the periactin. I think I read that you are going to the convention. If that is the case, maybe you could wait until then and speak to Dr. H before making a decision??? Good luck! Guest guest
We also found this with , but ONLY with the breakfast dose. So we keep the breakfast dose lower and the dinner dose at the higher prescribed dose. Although may not seem to eat more, we learned (painfully) that this altered dose is better than no dose at all.... her weight gain velocity dropped significantly when we stopped the Periactin altogether. So I would recommend dropping the morning dose back down and keeping the dinner dose at the new prescribed dose, and see how that goes. I just read a medical journal article on the use of cyproheptadine for ADHD children who had weight loss due to the stimulant meds they were put on for ADHD. The children who had cyproheptadine combined with the stimulant GAINED weight, PLUS, guess what else, the majority who had insomnia problems from the stimulants had it go away once the cyproheptadine was added -- because it made them sleepier. I think that the problem is simply that our kids get sleepier on the cyproheptadine, and tired kids = cranky kids. The children who are younger and still take naps probably feel these side effects less, I am guessing????, because they still take regular daily naps. > Hi, > > Colin has been on Periactin since last November.
