Guest guest
I emailed Dr. Ponseti and he replied (yay!) about Livi's feet. He says she would be better off in the brace. There's no way we can afford this! I'm wondering, treatment-wise, what is the benefit of the brace over the markells? I've heard so many good things about it, but I'm not sure what more it will do than what we're already doing. Obviously if there is a huge benefit we will have to find a way to pay for it. On that same note- anyone know of any financial aid that might help us get this? I'm 24 with a 1 year old and a baby due in 2 weeks, and my husband does not work (he's a full time student and full time housedad during the day so we don't have to pay for daycare). We have no $$$$$ right now! Darby Livi 3/15/04 bi cf EDD #2 5/12/05 (!!!)

Guest guest
Go to your county Human Services and they can help you get some medical coverage. My husband and I both work full time and we qualify. They will even retro activate it for 3 months prior. Also the s are now being covered by a lot of insurances. Guest guest
Do you have insurance? Even though we aren't using the 's I did all of the legwork ahead of time in case we needed them, and I found that my insurance does cover them at the same rate they do the Markell's. The trick is making sure the bill is coming from the 'right' place. If you want, you can e-mail me kannhoudek@... and I can explain what I did. It was a bit of a pain, but I'm pretty persuasive and found a way for them to work a loophole. > I emailed Dr. Ponseti and he replied (yay!) about Livi's feet. Guest guest
Hi Darby we too had to switch from the markells to the mitchells and i know how expensive they can be. i do not work just my dh and we did not have insurance. i had state medicaid for and i asked to get her shoes covered. it was a long process b/c we are from tx. and dr.p and john mitchell are from iowa. but what i did was i took my daughter to see her ped and showed him how her feet were not corrected so he did a referral to dr.p b/c i explained to him that the other 2 dr.'s had not corrected her feet. so i could not speak w/ the medicaid it had to all be done through her ped but what i think helped was that i faxed a copy of dr.p's email to my ped's secretary and she faxed it to the medicaid. the email contained enough info of her feet to grant me 3 visits and her shoes. dr.p explained in a letter that the mitchell shoes were a medical necessity for her. i would definetly try applying through your state you never know. i could not believe that medicaid paid it since it was out of state and was told not to get my hopes up because when it is out of state it is usually denied. so give it a shot whats the worst they can is no? then you start looking in other places. dont get discouraged, hang in there and let us know what happens. Guest guest
I guess I'll probably have to apply for medicaid- I have insurance already but I think I'd still qualify. We were trying not to do it - it's a lot of hoops to jump through (I started the application for it once but never finished it) and we (DH and I) just felt guilty for asking for more help - we already get aid from Children's Hospital to pay for Livi's foot bills. But I guess we are the type of people it's meant to help, and we wouldn't need it forever... This is the reply I received from Jean (his wife maybe?) about the costs/insurance: Dear Darby- I cannot guarantee that your insurance will cover them. We are working on getting a medicaid number and then from there we are working on getting BC/BS to cover them. This has been a long process for us and I'm not sure when we will be able to get the other insurance companies to cover it. The cost right now for the brace and shoes is $350.00 plus $22.00 for the impression kit and shipping so we're talking $382.00. The first thing we do is get an impression of your daughter's feet and then after we receive that back from you it will take about two weeks to get the shoes/brace to you. We accept check or credit card. Please let me know if you have any further questions. Guest guest
I would definetly do it. i know it is a pain to get all the papers you need sorted and a lot of info to get to them but its worth it. my daughters medicaid is about to expire also and she will need a new pair of mitchells in about a month or 2 so i know how you feel. ive got to go through the whole process again to try and get her another pair approved but it should be easier since they already paid for her first pair. Please dont feel guilty your not doing anything wrong in asking for help. unfortunetly when it comes to medical bills everything is sky high! and that is an understatement! if you qualify for the help definetly do it! and BL CF 12/160/03 > > > I emailed Dr. Ponseti and he replied (yay!) about Livi's feet. > He > > says > > > she would be better off in the brace. Guest guest
What state do you live in Darby? OUr state has an intervention program and something called the Bureau for Children with Medical Handicaps (BCMH) that will pay for stuff that insurance won't cover even copays and stuff like that. If your ortho is in the same state as you are, they will know if there is such a thing. Also, a local children's hospital would probably have an office where you could find out about such resources. Good luck to you. Jenni --- Darby dabrennan@...> wrote: > I emailed Dr. Ponseti and he replied (yay!) about > Livi's feet. Guest guest
We got the same response from them on my first inquiry. Then I called insurance, and they wanted the codes they'd be using for billing. In case you will be checking that out, here are the codes: L1907 for the shoes and L3150 for the brace. When I called my insurance back, they looked up those codes and found that they do cover the equipment, but they don't list the 's as approved suppliers. We worked it out with Gillette Children's so they would bill insurance instead, and then they would be covered at our usual rate. > > > I emailed Dr. Ponseti and he replied (yay!) about Livi's feet. > He > > says > > > she would be better off in the brace. Guest guest
Very interesting! Maybe I won't have to go through the medicaid maze after all. Guest guest
, I found this online for you. In Pennsylvania, it is called the Bureau of family health and I found this link where it deals with orthopedic stuff. http://www.dsf.health.state.pa.us/health/cwp/view.asp?a=179&q=232606 I also found something that says that all states have a title V program which does similar things although eligibility varies by state. This link has a list of bureau names and contacts for each state: http://www.fightautismnow.com/id43.html Hope this helps.
