Guest guest
with my first pregnancy they told me that the test was only about 20% accurate. Good luck with what ever you decide but I have to agree with hubby, why waste the money for the test? Guest guest
Hi everyone! I just wanted to post that I had my second OB appointment today, and everything is great! I'm 13 weeks, in second trimester, no problems, and got to hear the baby's heartbeat on the doppler today. That was awesome! Just as great as the ultrasound. Anyways, heartbeat is strong and doc says the baby is REALLY active in there, he was actually laughing about it, saying I could have a little monster on my hands come about age 2, LOL! Hubby couldn't be there today because of work conflict, but will go to my next appt. Next appt. I am to have the AFP test done to find Down's, etc. I am a little conflicted on this, I have read about so many false positives, but also am thinking if it's a false positive, they can then do amnio to be certain, and then put my mind to rest, so to speak. Anyone have any special thoughts or feelings about this test? Hubby kind of feels like we shouldn't have it, we get what we get and will love it no matter what (which is DEFINITELY true), but I also feel like if it does show Down's, etc. we would have that much more time to prepare mentally, physically, monetarily and emotionally for the challenge ahead. It wouldn't change the outcome no matter what, but I think extra time to prep for something like that would be better than finding out on the fly, you know? Any thoughts and opinions are welcome! C. Guest guest
I did not do one of those tests due to the false results. I would not do an amnio either. I would not terminate either way so I figure why have the test and worry myself the whole pregnancy if it came back positive or have a risky amnio for nothing. Guest guest
Hi , I took the AFP and the quad marker test because I wanted to be as prepared as possible for whatever comes our way. My husband has 2 nephews with Aspergers syndrome (sp) and I had an uncle with autism...so for us it was a question of being well informed. Luckily both tests turned out just fine for us. I think its a personal decision. Chrystal Wife to Jace - together 6 Years! Happy Mommy to - 4 Years Old! Jonas Due July 28, 2004! Guest guest
Hi, . I'm scheduled for AFP testing on my next visit (6/29/04). I had some reservations about the test, but am going ahead with it. I won't be doing any amnio, regardless of the results. Because I will be 35 when I deliver, I am going to have the longer version of an ultrasound at 20 weeks. An experienced tech can tell a lot of things from this type of ultrasound, including the likelihood that the baby has any neural tube defects, or Down's. Definitely don't feel pressured to have an amnio if you don't want one. Ultrasound isn't as accurate, but it is a much safer alternative. Hope this helps! Guest guest
Hi . Way to go on your active bee-bee. I'm also torn re the AFP, I'm scheduled to have it in 3 weeks, after the gender US. Heard about the false positives---think babycenter has an excellent section on this. I'm agreeing only cause doc is the head of OB in one of the top hospitals in town, PLUS I'm all for insurance comps paying up. Can we tell doc NOT to reveal the results? Dunno... Hopefully it'll be yet another thing I (we) worried about for nothing. Guest guest
I chose to do the test because it is only a blood test and non invasive. I wanted to know even though it would not have changed our outcome either. Luckily all came out great because I really was against an amnio - My thought was I would deal with a problem when the baby comes instead of having an invasive proceedure when it wouldn't change what I would dop anyways. It is a personal choice but if it is just a blood test why not/ - Diane > Hi everyone!
