Guest guest
Dear Pam, I so understand what you are saying. I have been in that boat. Finally have started digging myself out of it. Suggestions? I have found therapy helpful every so often. It's usually not more then 5 or 6 sessions, just enough to keep on track. As for portable snacks, I try things like string cheese, nuts, peanut butter and crackers, and protein bars. Infact, I try to keep a protein bar or two in my purse for emergencies. Guest guest
I am having to monitor my sugars as well, and they have asked me to monitor 1 hour postprandial also. Mine are running high at 1 hour, but normal at 2 hours. Not sure what the significance for gestational and 1 hour postprandials is, but that seems to be the regular time frame for checking them as far as gestational diabetes goes. I am getting numbers as high as 195 or so one hour postprandial but am completely normal fasting (70s-80s) and also completely normal 2 hours postprandial. The foods they suggested I eat totally turned me off. They want you to have TONS of carbs now as opposed to last time I was pregnant. It's just all spaced out and the diet to me seems nerve-wracking. I think I'm just not going to worry about it unless they get abnormally high and stay that way consistently. Good luck to you. Let me know what you hear from your docs. I'm not so sure I'm going to go back to my diabetes nurse educator just because I have 5 million other things going on with this pregnancy (kidney stones and repeat kidney infections) and 3 kids at home from school for the summer. Just making it to my regular appointments these days is a stretch for me. I figure I'll keep track of my sugars and show them to my doc. If they want me to go back I will, but I would rather not. Good luck again!! Mandi in Concord, NC Postop Distal RNY 09/23/02 32 weeks pregnant with #4.
Guest guest
> I have a question for you all about blood sugar...First of all let me ... I am type 2 diabetic, but not preggers. I know that the biggest thing about blood sugars is to keep them as steady as possible. As for the high after eating, that is normal, and the fact that it came right back down is a good sign. best way to check is first thing in the am...after 12 hrs fasting. If your numbers are normal, you can relax a bit. Also, my nutritionist has told me not to test until at least 2 hours after a meal, as that allows your body to do what it does. You might also try very hard to watch your carb intake. If you can maintain a steady flow without insulin or other intervention, the better for you and baby. I had 3 miscarriages prior to being diagnosed with my diabetes, and it is a suggestion of my doc that my raging blood sugars may have been the cause, as early on it can cause great fetal distress and heart problems with the baby. All in all, best thing to do is keep monitoring, and do your best to eat healthy. Your OB knows what is best (one hopes). Also, you may want to request an alternative glucose test when the time comes. I have heard many say that the standard test makes them sick. Guest guest
Hi , Here in Canada, we do what Donna suggests and test at 2hrs after a meal. After one hr, your blood sugar will normally be high. As long as you are not symptomatic, I would advise that you not check them every 10-15 mins - that will only make you stress and worry about the numbers, and as with alot of things medical and numbers orientated - they are guidelines that go along with how you are feeling and are not the be all and end all of diagnosis. My father has a BP monitor and has been having problems with low BP's lately. You talk to my mom who takes it every ten mins when he is low and all it does is freak her out.. Also, machines have been known to sometimes be wrong, so you may want to get your Dr to order a lab/meter comparison if you will have to be doing blood sugars regularily, just to make sure your machine is not in need of being calibrated. As for blood sugars dipping, I have seen that happen in pts and in myself - I had a glucose tolerance test about four yrs ago (preop, not pregnant at the time)...my blood sugar started out as normal, I drank the orange crush sugar drink from heck and my blood sugar steadily dropped to way below normal by the two hr mark...And by the two hr mark, I felt like crap and had to eat something to be able to drive home (even though the drink had the equivalent carbs of 5 slices of bread=75g)....This is what is sometimes known as hypoglycemia or insulin sensitivity - where your insulin kicks in like crazy when you eat carbs, bringing your blood sugar wayyyyy down. It can be a precursor to diabetes, and since you have a history of it, its good that you are keeping an eye on it... Best thing to do is eating small frequent balanced meals - with enough protein to help keep your blood sugar stabilized for longer periods of time. Carbs + proteins together are often a good bet for this (and we combine alot on my unit where we take care of type 1 diabetic kids)...the protein will outlast the carb in your blood stream and keep blood sugars more steady... Hope this info helps you...And congrats and good luck in this pregnancy!!! All the best, RN VBG May/03 -104lb in 9 mos Now prego with #1! Guest guest
I had to test mine for a little while and they were weird too. I went for my fasting test and then to eat and 2 hours later a blood draw and the numbers were 85 fasting but 64 2 hours after eating a Mcdonalds bisquit, hashbrown and orange juice. The doc said the sugar levels in the food and oj will make you raise but not stay with you long and will make them crash. The girls online told me that protein will make your levels more stable longer and the carbs and sugar crap will just make it go up faster. So if my sugar were low I could eat a carb to get it up there faster but to maintain it I needed to eat small servings of protein regularly. I am not good with this either but my best guess is for you to try to eat a more balanced diabetic type diet to keep it regular. I was also diabetic for both my previous prenancies including twins, lol, but so far I guess I am good with this one Good Luck and I hope someone can help you out here more than I could. Guest guest
I read on the group that tylenol pm was okay tot ake to get some rest, i personaly have not tried it though. I would suggest not getting in the habit of it though. I also think you can use a stool softener safely such as colace to help soften the stool, it is not a laxative but a softener and works well. Guest guest
I can't comment on the sleep thing but as for the constipation.... In the beginning I was so constipated I'd say it was the worst pragnancy symptom that I had. It was horrible. I tried benefiber and it made it worse! The doctor told me to take colace up to 3 a day for a stool softener. When I still needed things to move I could taks Milk of Magnesia. That did the trick. I'd say the MOM worked better for me but the stool softener helped the passing. I since added 1 packet of instant oatmeal a day to my diet and being further along eat a larger variety of foods and have not had the problem in months. Also make sure you are drinking at least 64-90 oz of water a day. Good luck I hope this is a phase that passes for you too. - Diane > I can't seem to get more than 4 and a half hours of sleep at a time is there anything I can take to help me sleep more that wont affect or harm the baby? Guest guest
4.5 hours of sleep at a time!?! You lucky girl you! LOLOL Not sure how far along you are, but 4.5 at a stretch, for me (33rd week with twins) is like a blessing. You may find yourself getting less hours in at a stretch and having to catch naps throughout the day. I would talk to your doc and/or pharmacist to find out what kind of sleep aids would be okay. Tylenol PM or Benadryl may be worth asking about. Guest guest
Doug, Thank you for doing the footwork your dad is not able to do--sincerely. We all need an advocate that is able to help! USC-LA, Dr. Om Sharma is wonderful with sarcoidosis. I know that Nat'l Jewish in Denver has a sarcoid-center-- but not sure of which docs are there. I did search by Denver CO sarcoidosis specialists and Marc Judson, MD is a critical care/pulm in Denver. He has alot of articles that are sited-- and I know he was part of the ACCESS study. Correspondence to: Marc A. Judson, MD, FCCP, Associate Professor, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, 96 Lucas St, ton, SC 29425; e-mail: judsonma@... Although this shows him in So. Carolina, I believe he's in Denver. I'd be calling them-- and see who they can suggest, along with Dr. Sharma or Dr. Baughman. These 3 would be your best bets to get names of specialists from. ( Baughman, MD.--you can find him on the web.) Start with Nat'l Jewish Sarcoidosis Clinic and ask them who treats NS in their area. Know we'll keep your dad in our prayers, and do let us know what more we can do to help. As Marla said, your dad needs alot more than prednisone and plaquenil. I'm sure they don't want to confuse things and put him on too much before they know what it is they're treating-- as they don't want to misdiagnose-- but if he's not testing positive for TB- and they've got him on stuff to treat it-- they're probably already off-base. I know this is so very hard on you and your mom, not to mention dad-- but this is one disease where they have to rule out all the other stuff and what is left over is sarcoidosis. Did his lymphs or any of the biopsies come back positive for sarcoidosis? Have they done a bronchoscopy to get the biopsies of the lungs? I know you said they did major surgery-- but they've not been able to tell you what has come back? There are a couple of centers that do take up to six weeks to culture the biopsies and stains-- so sometimes it does not happen fast-- so in the meantime they are trying to keep him going by high dose steroids (prednisone) while they wait for the results. Hang in there, Sincerely, Tracie NS Co-owner/moderator Re: HELP!!! Doug, I am very sorry to hear your Father is so ill, you said he lives in Denver, what clinics have you been to? Nat. I have many of the same symptoms you are describing, pain, of which I found Lyrecia very very helpful, took away about 95% of the pain. I have trouble walking, weakness, etc. My tests were all neg and I was dx on symptoms, mental confusion, numbness and loss of use of L. side. Tell me more about where your Father has been treated, he needs more then Prednisone and Plaquanil. You have come to the right place, but many of us ourselves are very sick and may take a day or two for you to hear back from others. But we know what you are going through. To Whom It May Concern:My name is Doug . I am writing on behalf of my father. He has been very ill and continues to get progressively worse and lives in the Denver area. He has been through every test imaginable(2 spinal taps, 2 surgeries to extract lymph nodes, 3 MRI's, 1 PET Scan to mention a few and has been treated for TB most recently as a precaution) and seen every specialist available to him and they cannot diagnose him definitively so he can find some sort of treatment. One minute they say he has Lymphoma, then they say it could be T.B. and the next it is Neuro Sarcoidosis. The two dangerous biopsy procedures that were done were a Media Stynum procedure to remove Lymph tissue from below his rib cage and a more intrusive procedure of opening up his chest and removing tissue from between his heart and lungs. They have not made a definitive diagnosis after almost two months. We are scheduled to see his Neurologist again next Tuesday(which I feel is too late) with hopes once again that they will have a plan of action to treat what I think they are leaning toward in the Neuro Sarcoidosis. I implore you. Please!!! I am desperately trying to help my father who is suffering and has been going through this for months now. I feel that we must have the BEST doctors in order to figure this out and have more than lost confidence in his current doctors. His P. E.T.scan showed masses below his chest, in his spinal column and lesions in his brain. As I understand it, these "masses" are explained as inflammation of the spinal cord from the Thoracic spine up through the Cervical Spine and into the lower part of the brain.I found you on the web and hope you can stear me in the right direction for my father and dealing with his Neuro Sarcoidosis. PLEASE HELP!!! I'M DESPERATE to help my father who is 69 years old and a great person. My folks are overwhelmed and don't know where to turn for answers. Their doctors seem baffled meanwhile the progession of his symptoms are worsening even though he is being medicated with Prednazone and Plaquenil, not to mention 5 T.B. medications and multiple pain killers. He is having more occurrences of memory loss, stabbing pain in his left side, paralysis in his left side such that he can hardly walk, and was walking on his own just a few weeks ago.Who or Where is the best Facility in the USA to recieve treatment for NeuroSarcoidosis? Have you tried University hospital, they have some good neurologist. I am waiting to get started on a new drug. There are many here with even more information for you, so hang in there, getting the pain under control is big, so talk about that with the doctors, there are drugs that can help. You have come to the right place, but many of us ourselves are very sick and may take a day or two for you to hear back from others. But we know what you are going through. Guest guest
Thank you Tracie for your heartfelt letter. I truly appreciate the referrals. I'll be in touch. Blessings to you dougtracie feldhaus wrote: Doug, Thank you for doing the footwork your dad is not able to do--sincerely. Judson, MD, FCCP, Associate Professor, Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, 96 Lucas St, ton, SC 29425; e-mail: judsonma (AT) MUSC (DOT) edu Although this shows him in So.
