Guest guest
Has anyone else had this type of weightloss surgery? It's a form of RNY, but it's more advanced. For example - my stoma is only 3cc's big...the size of a grape. Reason I ask is because the high-risk doctor tried arguing with me last week saying that it's impossible to have a stomach that size...and that I'd be dead. Well.....I'm still here five years later! We got onto the subject when discussing having an NG tube during my csection (if complications arose again) and I told him NO WAY. Instead of the stomach being cut directly across, mine has a little 'circle' sewn in. I think I'll share the surgerical reports with him next visit. We also argued about my weightloss. Aside for obvious reasons to go (miscarries, malabsorbtion problems and the surgery itself) my OB sent me because I've lost over 14 pounds now. (I'm only 16wks preggers) His ONLY reaction was that he was a very busy person and he thought my coming to him was a waste of time...I seemed fine, my bloodwork from seven weeks ago was okay, the baby was only measuring a week behind in size...and afterall, it'd be different if I weighed less than 100 pounds. " Get down to 105 and we'll start some detailed work. " I'm sorry but what a jack$$$! PS He was also told (and ins pre-authorized it) to perform a 2D and a 3D u/s and he only did a regular one...after I insisted!
Guest guest
You can't have a 3 cc stoma; the stoma is the junction between the pouch and the small intestine. Do you have a 3 cc POUCH? Know that there's no way a pouch will STAY that size over time; I'm sure you've stretched it somewhat, and the study I've read on that subject says that micropouches stretch more over time than normal ones, with most pouches at year five post-op measuring between 30 and 100 cc, regardless of starting size. All pouches have a little circle sewn into them for the stoma. You can be intubated as long as they use an endoscope to do it so that they can see exactly what they're doing. Why would you have a c-section? I do think you need to find a new OB. It doesn't pay to have such an adversarial relationship. This is just my opinion, but why have medical testing, like 2D and 3D ultrasounds, which can expose the fetus to risks, if you don't need it? Guest guest
This is just what I've been told, and what my surgical reports state. Here is one link to the licensed procedure...it is different than most weightloss surgeries. My surgeon was (is) Wood located in Detroit. http://www.coricenters.com/surgery_demo.asp Thanks I will have to undergo another csection because of the many complications when having my son. It pretty much came down to making a decision to either break my pelvis OR his shoulders...and he was only 7lbs. After four days of Petocin...I opted for the cesarean. Then came the three weeks of isolation due to yet another staff infection...the first infection was after the weightloss surgery. Fun huh? Anyhow, I dont think anyone should be called an idiot for it and that comment was quite uncalled for in my opinion. Its better to teach people and explain things than get all bent out of shape. Guest guest
Adam- Thank you for writing about this! I was beginning to think I (and hubby) were being a little too concerned. While my hubby and I were high-school sweethearts, we only reunited five years ago...just weeks after my surgery. He knows all about the surgery, but wasn't present thru all the months of my research. He too, thinks that the High Risk doctor should also be a little more 'interested' in educating himself on ALL types of weightloss surgery before making the comments that he did during my counsultation. It's like he says, " This is my first baby, and I didn't have your surgery...but what I know is that you NEED a certain amount of calories to ensure a healthy pregnancy. You can't get enough for YOURSELF...so there's no way you could get in the 'norm' amount needed for ANY pregnancy. The baby is taking EVERYTHING you ingest, and I just hope you can get through the next five months without hurting the baby...it IS REAL concerning to me. " While it's comforting to know that there are others on this board that have had the same surgery, have too...lost weight, and are much closer to their duedates...it's very scary that I'm only 'down' half as much as e and still have so far to go! That HR doctor went on about my needing 2,000 calories... " Just do your best to eat that amount. So you have to eat it in smaller amounts...at least try! " He made it sound like I'm not *willing to try. It's not a matter of that though...as you KNOW...I CANNOT eat that much! I forgot to mention that he told me he wanted me in for a Gluclose test. I told him that I wanted to go thru other means of getting the results. Again - " Look, this is a regular procedure. I know you're a little worried about dumping (speaking as though he's SO educated about the surgery) but women do it everyday and you can too. " I just found out that Dr. Wood has an office at my hospital (my surgery was at Detroit Riverview and I knew that he had moved around a little since then) and I'm going to try everything in my power to have my OB contact him...maybe get me an insurance-preapproved appointment with Wood also. MAYBE then he and my HR doctor will see that I'm not crazy. It also scares me that the HR doctor said the baby is measuring a week behind - in addition to my not feeling kicks yet. When I was pregger with my son, I was 260# and I started feeling kicks at 16 weeks. I was so excited about feeling this second baby sooner - and really thought there was no doubt of it with my being 130# lighter. I just started my 18th week and I'm still not feeling it! Please PLZ keep me updated on e's pregnancy...and I wish you guys the best of things - good delivery and healthy baby. Thanks so much again! in Detroit
Guest guest
e didn't start feeling Adia until about the 20th week...Don't worry...Her OBGYN Is AWESOME!! He told her look...if your hungry eat if not then don't eat...the baby will be fine...he has been doing this for 14 years...he worked in Florida before he moved to Louisiana...and he stated that he saw a crap load of women who were pregnant after having WLS...so he knows what to look for...he stated the only extra concern he has about you ladies is still birth...women who had the surgery are prone to a higher risk of having it...not sure why...so that is why he will start seeing e every week starting on the 32 week instead of the typical 36 week...he will put her on the monitors and do a stress test every time...Im not sure if you know this or not but a woman only needs to ingest 300 extra calories to sustain a pregnancy...so this eating for 2 bit is so last year!!! e's dr put it well when he told us this story about WWII...He stated when Hitler took over he starved hundreds of thousands of people...which a lot of those women were pregnant...some of those women went their WHOLE pregnancy not eating at all...years after that happened they did a study on the children born to those mothers and children born to mothers after all of that who had normal healthy pregnancy and their were little or no difference in the rate of children w/ birth defects and such...so it goes to show that just because you had this surgery and you cannot eat that much does not mean your baby will die or come into this world w/ defect after defect...Hope this helps...oh yeah...Get another Dr. And I did mean it when I stated he was an Idiot...He needs to take some classes on all of this and catch up w/ the times!!! Guest guest
Thanks again Adam. Your msg made me feel better...it's not like I'm losing sleep over it or anything...but it's just that this is my last pregnancy, have had two miscarriages and I just want to make it the healthiest possible. I keep reminding myself that I only gained 22# with my son and lost over 26# when leaving the hospital. I honestly am not looking/hoping to gain lots of weight, I just didn't think I'd start losing this much. On a better note!!! My son and I were at the fruit market today hand- picking Bing cherries and the baby kicked (REALLY kicked SEVEN times in a row) for the first time. My son was so excited that he started yelling " Mama! She must like cherries..hurry, get a WHOLE BUNCH! " I was relieved when the dietician reminded me that I only needed 300 additional calories - but that was before she said that I had to eat 2000 total. Ugh - All I can do is try my best right? That's so cool that you guys found an OB that you respect so highly. Too bad I'm 1700 miles away. On the *Hitler note: I've thought about that sort of thing also. I think about all the TINSY TINY women that have big babies...if they can do it so can we. We've been renting a home doppler and I listen to the hb twice a day. Sure, it's batteries to buy but it's paid off in emotional sanity. Have a good Sunday night... in Detroit
Guest guest
, I agree with Jacque on not worrying about the 2000 calorie thing! Eat well, drink water, take your vitamins and supplements. Baby will take what he/she needs and as long as you are taking care of yourself, both of you will be just fine. At last, enjoy you pregnancy. Best wishes to you!!
