For those who have MELAS, does anyone also suffer from psoriasis? I

know that there are other autoimmune diseases that can be caused by

MELAS, and I was curious to see if anyone suffered from psoriasis as

well. I have MELAS and I have bouts with psoriasis. My mother (who

also has MELAS) suffers from hypothyroidism. I read somewhere that if

a parent had an autoimmune disease or if you have one autoimmune

disease , then you are at a higher risk of having another (or an)

autoimmune disease.

Thanks,

Caroline

There does seem to be a genetic link to autoimmune diseases. I know there are

several in our family. I have hashimoto's and vitiligo. But I do not have

psoriasis.

The MDA site has an article about:

Protein Variant May Be Autoimmune Disease Risk Factor

Here is the link if anyone is interested.

We have MELAS in our family.

my 39 yr old brother has what he thought was psoriasis on his legs. Had it

since high school. Couple years ago started losing pigment in his face. doc

told him was vitiligo, that is what on his legs also but his legs are scaly and

itchy and his face is not. He has no other problems that he knows of.

I am 43 and am diabetic, my blood sugar goes up with physical exercise. I have

a small patch on the back of my neck that is similiar to psoriasis that my gp

had me try some lotion of some sort on a couple of years ago. Helped for awhile

but them came back. I really never mentioned it to her again. I have problems

with scaly patches on my scalp but only in a small area and not too bad.

Do not know if my sister and mother who died from MELAS had any problems. My

mother was a diet controlled diabetic.
