Guest guest
Bren, (my Knoxville grandaughter) just had her 4th casting. I didn't go with them this time but at her third casting I saw her feet and was amazed! They look sooo good! You can still see how tight the tendon is and Dr. Madigan said she will definetly need the tendon surgery in a few weeks. But everything else is really looking good!!! She has learn to use her casts to manuver herself around on her mom's and dad's bed! My daughter let her stay in bed with them this morning after the 5 a.m. feeding. She dozed for a little while and woke up with Bren turned sideways and trying to push her mommy off the bed! Gee, can't wait to see what she can do with those heavy braces!! Guest guest
Liz, I'm so glad things are going well for Bren. Sounds like here feet are looking good. I love to read all the postings for encouragement and advise but don't post very much unless there's something I feel compelled to chime in on. We were actually at Dr. Dobbs office in St. Louis yesterday with our son, Kolby, who is now 18 mos. Dr. Dobbs is his 3rd Dr. Both of the other Drs in our Nashville area thought he needed tendon transfer surgery but couldn't agree on dates, 1 said " now " and the other said about the age of 2. On our first visit last September with Dr. Dobbs, he disagreed that the surgery was needed. He began recasting and corrected Kolby's feet once again. Now, 8 months later, he has had a small relapse with his left foot. Nothing major to be concerned about but he did cast him again yesterday to regain the correction he has lost. He's had a very stubborn left foot which the other Drs wanted to give up on. To make a long story short, we discussed the tendon transfer surgery again yesterday(we brought it up) and he said that tendon transfers were typically for " older " children (older than Kolby) who have experienced multipal recurrences. Dr. Dobbs said the surgery needed to be performed when a child's bones were big enough to " accept " the tendon. In saying all that, it worries me that Bren's Dr. has already decided she needs tendon surgery, and to do it at her age? Someone please correct me if I am wrong. And when you said tendon surgery, I may have misunderstood what type of surgery but any surgery sounds scary so young. On a positive note, Dr. Dobbs did say that the tendon transfer was not the most major of surgeries because it didn't involve joints, pins, etc. But, nevertheless, it is still surgery. From someone who went thru 3 Drs in 10 mos., don't be scared to get second opinion. (or 3rd...lol). Once she has the surgery, you can't go back. We now drive 5 hours one way to see Dr. Dobbs. but it did get Kolby out of unnecessary surgery. Good luck with Bren and keep us updated on her progress. Once again, someone please help me out if I'm on the wrong page. I just felt like I needed to say something on this one. Guest guest
i agree with tracy here.. and we probably saw the same doctor's here in nashville... and i also drive 350 miles one way to see dr dobbs now... but i would not trade that for anything... grace's local doctor was treating her feet (even though she is bilateral) at different times.. so her left foot had the tenotomy and then after that healed the right foot... and the left foot was left free while the right was done and casted... so the left started tightening up and turning back in within 2 weeks after the cast was removed.. and he said we would deal with it later.. that it was just a tricky foot... after all she had been through and her foot was back to the same position before the surgery... and now we were supposed to deal with it later... oh no... not us... i emailed dr P and he said to email dr dobbs and so many people on this board said to email dr dobbs and straight to him we went and haven't looked back... so second and third anc fourth opinions should be looked into until all others are exhausted... i am a strong believer... once you have the surgery you can't go back... mommy to Grace 12-03-03 BCF Dobb's Brace 16/7 russplus0075@...> wrote: Liz, I'm so glad things are going well for Bren. Guest guest
Liz, I just realized after I sent you my long winded email earlier about a tendon transfer that you may have been making reference to a tenontomy........If that is what you were referring to, please disregard my babble about a second opinion as a tenotomy on the achilles tendon falls right in line with Ponsetti Method. I need to think about these things before I respond, huh??? :-) Please do let me know which one you were referring to when you said tendon surgery.
