NT Boys tend to train closer to 3 then 2 so especially a child who is non verbal and only 2.5 I would think you might want to wait. In 6mos he may have more language and be better able to cope with the demands placed on him. Another thing to consider is that 1 in 5 children develop some form of stool withholding and lots of these kids develop this condition from pressure to potty train before they are ready. You don't want your child to start withholding...it is the worst! Please, understand maybe your child is showing every sign in the book to want to potty train and he may really be ready but if you feel you have to take the lead in training, then he simply may need more time. Also maybe in a few months time his bm's will be more formed which will make it easier for you. I have 3 boys and my first started training at 30mos but had lots of problems, my second suspected Asperger's child trained himself by 3. It was much more relaxed and so much easier! My 3rd just turned 3 in April but I am waiting til June when he is out of school. He has shown lots of signs including leading me to the bathroom but he still isn't quite ready and doesn't need the added stress of potty training at this time. Neither does mommy! Sorry if I sound critical because I am not trying to be. I wish you lots of success with whatever you decide. Debbie
Guest guest
Ok I bought the Once Upon a Potty video and book and cassette, LOL! (3 yrs, PDD, with tons of echolalia) can repeat the whole thing word for word. She is now more willing to sit on the potty. I haven't pushed it yet...waiting for a little more language. But I read on another list that a mom used it with her severe ASD son and one day he suddenly figured it out! Just ran in there and sat on the potty and that was the end of it! So I am hopeful! Hugs, H We of course use the girl version! BTW my husband is so sick of the potty song, etc! ROFLOL!
Guest guest
Thank you You are so right. He has gone to the potty but it's with a fight. Gabe did do better today, but I do find he is holding. I think I will take your advice. Thanks again Rebekha
