I agree, our doc is Ponseti Certified and dedicated and less than 25 miles

away. We could not ask for more...unless of course he lived in our

neighborhood..lol !

Could whoever created this poll please make an option for *local*

treatment? Meaning, some of us have treatment available within just few

miles of our home. Sure it qualifies as less than 100 miles, but I think

it would be interesting to know how many of us are fortunate enough to have

someone at our local hospital or clinic who is Ponseti certified.

See... I could say our doc who is Ponseti Certified, yet modifying big

time is local. Meaning it takes me about 20 minutes to get to an

appointment. And I bet there are a number of people who don't have to

travel too far to get treatment, certainly much less than 100 miles. Which

if our doc was doing it properly would be very cool...

So I couldn't answer the poll myself... but someone might have a local doc

who is for real. I'm just thinking there needs to be a category for us

city rats :~}

I voted for the 100 miles or less, but I was also in the same boat,

and the category " local, 25 miles or less " didn't fit either. I

consider Dr. Dobbs " local " but he is about 45 miles from home (I call

it local because I drive that distance everyday for work). If anyone

wants to add a " local, 50 miles or less " category I will change my

vote, otherwise I guess I can leave it at 100 miles or less.

My, aren't we a picky group. I'm sorry I bothered. Seemed pretty straight

forward to me, but what do I know. Yes, for those of you who requested it, I

changed the $%()$&$)!!~~* miles options.

ee,

I was wondering if you were having a bad day or something...my jaw dropped

when I read your response! If it makes you feel any better I had to change the

response choices to a poll I posted a while back, can't imagine who was being

picky back then...no names....;-p lol...

Okay ee, hate to bring this up, but I was going to answer the

poll--my answer wasn't there (I'm whispering this last part). We

would be in the 200-300 catagory and there's not a choice for that

(whispering again:).

well, I was actually thinking local as in +/-10 miles. Meaning, living in

the same town the doc is in. If you have to drive to another city it's not

quite *that* local. I was curious how many of us are really, really close.

Oh yeah... I'm picky! lol... Mostly just curious about this, since you had

the poll up seemed a good time to ask the question. But technically I

can't even participate in the poll because I can't in any honesty say we

see a Ponseti Doc. :~{

Hmmm, I see your point. I figure if you can drive there in an hour so it's

local, but maybe that's coming from my rural point of view. Not sure, I've

been to a few cities that took an hour of cross-town traffic to go ten miles!

LOL! Yet where I live an hour would cover 50 or 60 miles. OK, maybe 70....hee

hee

I am surprised you don't see a Ponseti doctor - are you using the Poneti

method?

same here, but the Shriners hospital is seriously about 15min even in

traffic from my house. It's on the same campus as our hospital, Dr's

offices and really quite close. I feel lucky. I'm in Portland, OR. Which

is a pretty good size city, not quite as large as Seattle but close. We

have less traffic but it is getting progressively worse. (shhhh... don't

tell! I want the traffic to stay in Seattle lol)

> I am surprised you don't see a Ponseti doctor - are you using the Poneti

I *do* see a Ponseti doc. He's even on the list. But he modifies as far

as bracing times, last cast abduction and FAB settings... AND now most of

his patients use AFO's because they can't tolerate the

FAB. Hummm.... he's only abducting to 55 degrees, FAB set at 50

degrees... What exactly does he expect? Now Darbi's foot came out fine

and fully corrected but that was nearly 2 years ago. Today I would NOT say

he was a Ponseti doc and I would NOT recommend anyone seeing him. So

technically, to see a Ponseti Doc I'd have to drive to Seattle to see Dr.

Mosca. That's about 250 miles.

He's the one I sent all that info to and wrote back (4w later) with thanks

and saying they're still deciding where they want to go with bracing there

at Shriners. I'm hoping they're using the info I sent and will go back to

the FAB but I don't know. I should email him again asking for an update.

Ya I hope he goes back to protocol - it would be a couple years before he gets

the bad results of modifying it, but in the mean time lots of babies get bad

results and Ponseti's method gets lots of bad press.

My daughter was already used in Dobb's study, unbeknownst to us. She was put

under for her tenotomy and Dobb's came to us afterwards and informed us that

blood was taken from her foot as part of research. It would have been nice if he

had asked first and it came to our knowledge that he was using Abbi as research

more and more as her treatment went on due to her complexity. We switched

because we personally did not want to be research, we wanted Abbi to be treated

properly. Abbi is doing well despite her possible foot turning in; although, I

have to say--she was standing normally today so maybe after a few times

standing, she will stand straight versus on the side or on her toes.

We shall see,,,,Becky

Forgive me if this has already been explained, but I've missed a lot of

threads recently and am unsure how to answer the poll. Is the study

focused primarily on families who show CF in more than one person or are

they looking at all CF families? There is an answer on the poll indicating

interest but we only have one family member with CF. Are those of us who

fit this category needing to check this answer as opposed to the first

*interested, contact me* choice or can we just say yes because we want to

participate? I sound like an idiot... sorry. Just not sure what to

choose. I would like to participate regardless of multiple family members...

Was there a call for participants sent here that I missed? Did it say who

was eligible?

Thanks for any info to help clear a muddled mind.

Becky,

I can't say what happened in this case but I do know they are required

to have your permission to use Abbi's blood in the study. Probably

someone forgot to do their part and get you to sign off on it first;

but if you had told Dr. Dobbs that you didn't want to be in the study

I'm sure he would have respected your wishes. I personally don't see

how being a part of the research study would have compromised her

treatment. The way I see it, if you participate in the study

extensively, your child would be on the forefront of the doctor's mind

and would probably get better treatment, not worse. But, of course

you are certainly entitled to your own opinion. Just curious who you

see now if you are not seeing Dr. Dobbs anymore.

Kori,

Yup, you missed it. I sent out a plea for participants for his study

last week. He is mostly interested in families w/ more than one

member who has clubfoot but I added that one about " yes, interested

but only one family member " to identify people who would like to

participate if he needs them even if they don't have 2 family members.

Thanks for the interest!

he asked us first and we had to sign a form and all that... so that is strange

that they took the blood without the signature first... but i'm sure that was

just an accident.. i am really hoping that this study will ensure that by the

time grace is having kids, he will be able to either prevent the CF gene or

" turn it off " as they say.. i am also pretty sure that CF runs in our family and

am curious as to whether i had the gene also... but i forgot to ask him last

time we were there... i was so excited to get reduced hours that i was in a

happy fog.. lol...

I have to agree with . I think Dr. Dobbs is a highly

respectable doctor who thinks only of these kids. I don't think it

would have affected your treatment had you told him you would have

rather your child not been a part of the research study. Being a

part of the study was definitely your decision. We chose to do it so

this gene could be isolated and when parents with babies born in the

future with clubfoot knew why it happened. That way it takes away

some of the " blame " . This could very well be a future grandchild of

mine someday. He is a wonderful doctor and I hate to think your

missing out on him because of his study. I bet he would never even

consider that he would lose a patient due to his study. You said you

wanted Abbi to be treated properly, did you not feel like she was

making proper progress? I am an RN and sometimes if we are starting

an IV or something and anticipate that blood will be needed for a

test or something we'll go ahead and draw a tube and get the orders

for it afterward to save the patient from gettting an additional

stick. Maybe that's why they took the blood while she was under. We

also had to sign papers saying we gave our permission to be in the

study. Like said maybe the proper person didn't come along

and take care of that. I know that's a lot of maybes--just trying to

give you a different perspective. We have been seeing Dr. Dobbs for

nearly four years now and I just can't imagine him being as you

portrayed him. But again, you are definitely entitled to your own

opinion.
