I talked to last week and he said something that those of you who have

the P/M brace might want to know. Apparently the price he has been

charging for replacement shoes is only half of what he should have been

charging. Poor , has been informed by his accountant that he's been

loosing thousands (many thousands) of dollars because he's charging the

price for only one shoe, yet providing two. I know this isn't good news,

but I wanted to warn all of you that he will likely have an increased price

for the replacement shoes from now on.

He is also making them as fast as he can, but still not keeping up with

demand and so busy making shoes that his wife Jeanne (sp?) has been helping

him with the administrative tasks like emails and paperwork so that's why

we've heard from her recently. Most of his orders are coming from the U of

Iowa, but as popularity increases we know he'll be making them for more

babes across the globe in the future.

He does have insurance codes that reflect AFO's which will be helpful for

many parents wishing to get these covered by insurance. I don't have the

codes with me right now, but the ones that were posted last week are the

correct ones so use those when you're calling verifying coverage.

The largest size he's made so far is a 5 which is about where Darbi is

right now but she will need larger ones to last her over the next

year. When Darbi's foot imprints get there he'll have probably the largest

feet yet so eventually he will offer them in the larger sizes. I think so

far, Darbi and Kai are the oldest babes who will be wearing them. Angel,

he asked how Kai was doing when I mentioned him saying he was nearly as old

as Darbi and likely would need shoes in the larger sizes too. If you're

going to be needing shoes soon, I would suggest calling him for an

impression kit so he can work on the larger mold for the soles.

I *almost* found out how he got started with this whole thing but my

battery went dead and I didn't get to hear the story so I can't tell y'all

about that lol.

I think that's it. If you have questions for him I can't recommend calling

and chatting with him more. He's a very nice man who is working

tirelessly pumping out as many braces as he can. Send him your orders

early so he has more incentive to get help and lead time to get them made

for you... and don't be surprised when the bill for replacement shoes is

twice as much as you'd thought it was going to be.

I just can't imagine how these guys do it, and Dr. Ponseti in

particular -- they devote soooo much time and energy to these children

and their feet. I wonder if there is a company who could help ;

does anyone know anyone who works for a shoe company? Actually I'm

surprised Markell hasn't gotten together with him to offer some

assistance. It just seems crazy to expect 1 man to make all the shoes

for so many clubfoot babies.

On my invoice one shoe was $132.00. So double that is $264.00 Impression kit

was $22.00 and shipping was 10.00. Total was $296.00. That did not include a

bar. didn't need one this time around.

We have already had two pair of shoes and the first pair was $350 the

next was only $150. It does add up, but at least the next pair was cheaper. We

are thinking it is time for #3...but then again, Abbi's feet are not really

growing. Her right foot is definitely bigger than her left...

yeah, that's what he said they were. But apparently he was charging $132

for both shoes in the past. When did you order the new shoes?

I just wanted to let people know that replacements would be more than they

were before because there had been a pricing mistake in the past. Did your

insurance cover any part of them?

I was fortunate... we've had them for about 4 weeks.. when he sent the

impression kit and bill it was at the 132.00. We paid that when we sent the

impressions back. Then when the shoes came he sent another invoice that said

132.00 per shoe. We called and his wife said they had just changed their

pricing.

The answer to the second part is.. We are waiting for reimbursement from the

insurance company. Haven't heard anything yet. But they said as long as it was

pre-approved and we sent them the prescription from the doctor there wouldn't be

a problem. BUT.. They did tell us with 's first shoes (Markells) that they

would only cover one pair per calendar year. But I think we could appeal that

considering the rate at which children's feet grow...

..I actually live next door to a gentleman who is in the shoe business

and we were trying to get them to meet. Unfortunately, my neighbor has been

extremely busy, traveling to China and such working on other things that he has

not had anytime. However, he is very interested in working with . I also

talked to some individuals who have been fighting for the insurance companies to

approve the shoes, that way more people will be able to afford these

shoes and hopefully making it easier for shoes to get noticed. Markell

shoes are so outdated and really seem to work with pigeon toed kids not CF

kids--unless they have regular CF. Those that have complex feet,

atypical--taking a mold is the way to go.

I am still trying because if I can help my daughter, I would love to help others

who cannot afford such shoes. Becky

and their feet. I wonder if there is a company who could help ;

does anyone know anyone who works for a shoe company? Actually I'm

surprised Markell hasn't gotten together with him to offer some

assistance. It just seems crazy to expect 1 man to make all the shoes

for so many clubfoot babies.

One pair of shoes per calendar year!!! What is wrong with these insurance

companies!! Get a clue people!! Let's just say for argument sake that

this applied to adults only. Even though their feet don't grow year to

year, the wear and tear would be much more on an adult. Man how

irritating!!!

Tell me about it... But if they will reimburse me for one pair of s

then I really can't complain considering all the people who still pay out of

pocket and have insurance.

Be happy your insurance company actually pays for the shoes. Ours

wasn't supposed to but through some glitch they actually covered

them...we had major problems with them #1 not wanting to cover the

appointments for weekly cast changes when Jake was a newborn (DUH!!!)

and #2 not wanting to cover the tenotomy surgery when Jake was 6 wks

old. They said it was NOT NECESSARY, and then decided that they

wouldn't cover it anyways because our dr office forgot to have it

pre-approved. GAH!! In any case they had to reprocess our claim 3 or 4

times before they would cover everything...it took a couple of nasty

letters from our dr to get them to cover the tenotomy. So, obviously,

when they actually covered his markell shoes & fab, I was not about to

correct them!! :-D

FYI

We offered to help with manufacturing, marketing,

distribution, etc. with his sandal over 1.5 yrs ago. Apparently,

he was not interested, or was fearful that he would lose control of the

product, or something.
