Guest guest
Hi My friend's little boy is 2 and he has just started smearing his poop all over the walls and the crib. My friend is pregnant with twins and has a four year old too and this smearing situation has to stop soon!!!!!!!!! Does anyone have any advice for her? She has been layering diapers and pullups when he takes a nap or sleeps during the night. They have also been using duct tape around the diaper. Any advice would be appreciated!!!!!!!! take care Pam
Guest guest
I found that clear package tape was even harder to get off than duct tape - it's harder to find the end :-) and you can run it down through the crotch too, just to make the diaper harder to rip. I've also heard of using those zip-up sleepers over the diaper, with feet and arms cut off if you want, put on backwards, so they zip up the back and kiddo can't unzip them. It's been awhile, but I remember how hard this was! Guest guest
Has she tried a Onesie? Something that snaps at the crotch might confuse him and he won't be able to reach down into his diaper. Guest guest
When Evan was smearing or just trying to stick his hands in his pants, I got was told to get him coveralls. At his age it was hard to find them in size in our area but I finally found some and he stopped soon after. For a two year old at bedtime what about sleeper pj's with the feet cut out and put on backwards. Betty Re: OT--How do you stop a 2 year old from smearing poop? > Has she tried a Onesie? Guest guest
Hi - when my daughter was in that stage ( which unfortunately lasted a VERY LONG TIME!!!) I turned her zip up pj's around and zipped them up the back. It's a game for the kids and a horror show for us - this too will pass... promise! : ) Amy Gracia
Guest guest
We used the zippered feety pj's and pinned the zipper to top w/ a diaper pin. The only thing that stopped my son from smearing was when we started him on secretin. I don't know if it's because the pooped firmed up or maybe didn't bother him - who knows - all I know is that he stopped. Guest guest
Our son started smearing his feces at the age of 3-1/2 & didn't stop until we started ABA therapy. Our therapist told us that we were probably doing something that was " reinforcing " this behavior (in our case it was because he would get a bath immediately after we found him smearing feces). Other than that, others have suggested it is a tactile issue, and that there is something about the consistency that they are enjoying. To combat this, regular times of playing w/play doh (gf/cf of course) seemed to alleviate the need to play w/the poopy!. Hope this helps. > In a message dated 5/5/2001 8:52:55 PM Eastern Daylight Time, apjj09@c... > writes: > > << Hi > My friend's little boy is 2 and he has just started smearing his poop all > over the walls and the crib. Guest guest
> . Our therapist told us that we were > probably doing something that was " reinforcing " this behavior (in our > case it was because he would get a bath immediately after we found > him smearing feces). We were concerned about that since he loved baths. So, he got a shower instead. He wasn't to crazy about showers. We tried putting diapers on backwards, he figured that out. We ended up using duct tape or packing tape and wrapped it all the way around. There was a girl at my sons school with the same behavior. In the winter, they used blanket sleepers put on backwards. In the summer she wore a gymnastic leotard, the ones with the short legs on them, not the body suit type. Then, they taped around each leg and her chest. That way she couldn't get in at her legs or get in at her chest. She wore clothes over this. Sure, people looked at us strange when we had field trips and it took a small army to change her but her poops were really stinky. You just couldn't get that smell off. I sure Mcs didn't want to have to close down their playground because of our little poop smearer. Of course, the interesting part was that her parents didn't seem to care. Maybe she didn't smear poop at home. Maureen
Guest guest
If anyone figures this answer out, they will make a small mediated fortune...Mason is VERY guilty of this at 3, we had a seamstress take and sew all his 2 peice jammies together and made an opening in the back so we could get him in and out..he also wears bibs (shorts, weather is hot) in the day so he can't pull his pants off, he hasn't figured out how to stick his hand UP the shorts yet...UGH the things we talk about LOL. Guest guest
It is amazing how many of us have been here. I can remember bringing it up at our support group and fearful that our son was the only who did this only to find two other parents fighting this same issue. Anyway, our answer to this came with multiple answers. We did everything in our power to eliminate the chance of our son getting his hands in his pants. The two things that worked best for our son were the sleepers with the zipper pinned and jean (or jean shorts) with a belt pulled tight (not too tight). But we believe that our son's yeast overgrowth and sensory issues added to the problem. Once we got the yeast under control, started secretin, and gave him sensory fixes he stopped and we were able to go back to normal clothes.
