Guest guest
Hi, people! Thank you for all your great answers regarding the activity stations and for your help with why ie is slipping out of his shoe. He hasn't slipped out since I've been putting it on tighter, so hopefully it will continue to be so. Okay, I have been reading most of the posts and have heard curvy toes mentioned and underdeveloped heels. I have noticed that 's heel on his clubfoot is VERY mushy, like a water balloon, while the heel on his good foot seems more meaty. Is this normal? Does it ever get better??? Also, his toes on his CF are funky-looking. They look almost zig-zagged or they curve in. I know Kori was mentioning something about curvy toes. What can be done?? Is changing the shoes the answer? Is this something that straightens out on its own or with stretching? Or does it never change?? Are the casts the cause of it? He has a curly toe on his " good " foot--where the second toe curls over the middle toe, but that is tendonal, I believe. I feel bad for him because his toes on his cf foot, while adorable as every ounce of him is, they are so odd-looking and stubby. Please let me know if you guys have experienced similar toe &/or heel issues. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!! rt cf 12/15/04 FAB 23/7 (halfway done!!) poohismybb@... wrote: I realize I'm posting very late with this one, but I thought I'd chime in anyway... There was talk of this capsule release for my son also. I emailed Dr. P and he said that it will cause a lot of scar tissue. If it can be avoided, avoid it. I also heard that as long as dorseflexion is at least neutral it's better than in equinus. And if Livi is at 5 to 7 than that's not so bad. -------------- Original message -------------- From my vague understanding of it, there is some soft tissue behind the achilles tendon that also seems to cause some tightness. THey go in and " release " it which I'm assuming means cutting into it. Doc didn't say we'd need to do it when we saw him today, but when we did the 2nd tenotomy it was advised that if this didn't work we would probably do the release later on. Guest guest
, Glad to hear that making the strap tighter is helping, I don't know what size wears but just as a comparison, Sammy is 7 months old and is in a 00 in the Markell's, his toes are all the way to the end and I almost always use the 7th hole, unless he is wearing thick socks, then when we are in the 6th. Regarding your heel question, my understanding is that the heel bone actually " drops " into that heel pocket on the clubfoot when they start doing more weight bearing and walking, so it won't remain " mushy " like that. Also, about the curvy toes, Sammy's are like that too, almost kind of " squiggly " . Dr. Dobbs said that they would straighten out over time as his foot gets bigger. The more pronounced curve like what Kori's Darbi has - she is hoping that the shoes will help due to having a roomier toe box. I have heard both things regarding the toes that sit funny, I think some can be fixed by splinting (i.e. taping a small piece of a popscicle stick to the toe) and some can only be helped by lengthening that tendon. This is by no means a scientific answer so anyone else who knows more on this jump on in here. Guest guest
Thanks ! Yeah, the toes just don't look right. But they probably just need time to be free and unrestrained by casts and shoes and such things. I'm going to keep a close eye on them. is in a size 000 and his good foot is on the 3rd hole and now the cf foot is on the 5th hole. It's as tight as it will go right now. But the good foot looks like it is growing out of the size 000. We will see. Thanks for answering about the heel. It just seems so atrophied. I guess I'm just stressing out about everything!! jagrindon@...> wrote: , Glad to hear that making the strap tighter is helping, I don't know what size wears but just as a comparison, Sammy is 7 months old and is in a 00 in the Markell's, his toes are all the way to the end and I almost always use the 7th hole, unless he is wearing thick socks, then when we are in the 6th. Guest guest
This reminds me, I keep forgetting to ask you all about this. We have talked a lot about funny toes, but does anyone else's clubfoot baby have funky toenails? Sammy's toenails point up, his big toe especially -- it is really weird, and impossible to cut! They actually grow upwards, like if his foot is flat on the ground his toenail is pointing upwards at probably a 60 degree angle or so. Is this just weird or has anyone else dealt with this? > > Hi, people! Guest guest
Hi All, Have been out of town for a while so am not nearly caught up yet...I noticed this post though, have any of you posted pics of your little one's toes on the cfpics site? I would be interested to see these toes. Our daughter Grace's are kind of hmm I guess crinkley would be accurate and her big toes curl up quite a bit. I was also told that they would straighten out as her feet grew. She is unilateral and it is not just her cf with the funny toes but both feet. I will take a pic and post on the cfpics site, would be interested if they look similar to some of the other cute funny tosies out there. Hope you all are doing well and enjoying the sunshine!!!!!!!! & Grace 07-21-04 Right unilateral cf FAB 14 hrs > > Hi, people! Guest guest
it's funny that you mentioned that because when I was reading all the posts about the toes nobody was mentioning the toenails. 's toenails were also sticking straight up and they looked squished, like there was only the top of the nail. It was really hard to cut and it had to be cut often. It's better now that he doesn't wear anything. So if your kids' nails or toes look weird don't worry everything will straighten out. and (09/22/01, ponseti method, right club foot) > >Reply-To: nosurgery4clubfoot >To: nosurgery4clubfoot >Subject: Re: Heel and toe questions >Date: Thu, 05 May 2005 02:48:06 -0000 > >This reminds me, I keep forgetting to ask you all about this. Guest guest
, My son's toenails on his clubfoot are just like you describe. I don't know if they always have been because he was in casts for seven months, but since he has been in the shoes they have been growing that way. All five of them, and they are impossible to cut. Guest guest
My son's toenails do exactly the same thing (point straight up especially the big toe). He had his 9 month checkup at the pediatrician's office today and we were talking about it. The nurse practitioner said that even some babies that don't have clubfeet have the toes and toenails that look like that and not to worry that after awhile they'll start straightening out. Guest guest
My daughter has way funky toenails. They grow straight up, and I cannot clip them, so I just file them down. Fortunately, she doesn't fight me with this and I can spend the time filing them down. I had asked Dr. Dobbs about this back in December, and he told me they would eventually look more normal. What's weird, is that she's right unilateral, but both of her feet have the toenail issue. It doesn't seem to bother her, but I am rather diligent with the filing. Guest guest
My son's toenails started to grow upwards then sideways. He even had small blisters on the big toes where the nails were growing into his toe. Anyway he is now 2 and his toe nails are all straight except his bigs ones but are 90% better and are only a bit turned up now. Guest guest
My daughter Grace also has the funky big toenails! I was told probably from them being pressed by the end of her casts......although now I wonder because if that were true wouldnt a baby with unilateral clubfeet only have it on the casted foot? Grace is going to be 4 in Aug. and her toenails have straightened out alot but are still bent upwards. Strange! > > > Hi, people! Guest guest
YES! 's toe nails are very very small and funky. His big toe nail curves straight out and is very hard to cut. When you do cut it, it is kind of hard to see because it kind of disappears behind the top of his toe if that makes any sense. My mom always asks about his toe nails, but we have so many other things to worry about a little funky feet are nothing! Our doctor says she rarely sees babies with cf that have normal looking toes. I wonder if it is from all the stretching everything does early on because 's got worse as his feet got straighter. I am glad to know isn't the only one with funky nails! > >Reply-To: nosurgery4clubfoot >To: nosurgery4clubfoot >Subject: Re: Heel and toe questions >Date: Thu, 05 May 2005 02:48:06 -0000 > >This reminds me, I keep forgetting to ask you all about this. Guest guest
Livi has some funky toenails as well. I was thinking about painting them the other day when I was doing my own... but I couldn't figure out how on earth to paint her big toenails - they point straight up, too! Guest guest
It's funny you say that, I was just looking at Sammy's toenails (as I was trying to cut the little buggers) and I do believe that his non-clubfoot nails are (or are starting to become) all funky too. I really thought it was just on the clubfoot, maybe it is partially caused from being squished in the cast and then in the shoes, does anyone with 's have the funky toenails issue? What's even more weird is that all the toenails except his second toes (both feet) are affected, but the 2nd toes nails look totally normal, weird... What's weird, is that she's right unilateral, but both of her feet have the toenail issue. It doesn't seem to bother her, but I am rather diligent with the filing. Guest guest
My son also has funky looking toes and nails. They actually look a lot better at 18 months then they did when he first got his casts off. He also gets the ingrowns every once in a while. My Ped has prescribed an oral antibiotic which helps after the toe has gotten infected. Do you have the name of the cream that your Ped prescribed so I can ask mine about it so I can have it on hand when this happens? Guest guest
So, are our children doomed to have funky-looking feet?? The thing is that 's " good " foot, while he does have a curly toe on that foot, the toenails are normal on that one. The cf foot has the toenails that are growing straight up. Very odd. And his big toe on that foot constantly gets ingrowns. I have an antibiotic cream that his ped. prescribed for when that happens. We should all ask our orthos about it. When I first casually mentioned it to our ortho he didn't seem to have ever seen it before. But now that I know it's not uncommon, I will press him more and perhaps he will look into it. and Grindon jagrindon@...> wrote: It's funny you say that, I was just looking at Sammy's toenails (as I was trying to cut the little buggers) and I do believe that his non-clubfoot nails are (or are starting to become) all funky too. Guest guest
I wouldn't worry. Time, growth and age seem to help many of these things. I haven't read all the posts on this, but I wouldn't say your kid is 'doomed' to have this. My daughter had funny upward pointing toenails for a while, but now they are just perfect; she's almost 5. As she has grown her foot looks more and more hard to tell apart from her other non cf foot. It's slim, straight, with normal toenails, etc. Looks beautiful. and Claire > So, are our children doomed to have funky-looking feet??
