Frustrated - what should I do?

As many of you know, Livi had a 2nd tenotomy and went back into the

FAB a couple weeks ago. It was ok at first, then our luck

deteriorated - she is right back to her left foot slipping out. No

matter what we do - we've tried turning the tongue upside down,

taking the tongue out, only lacing up to the 2nd to the top hole,

tightening them as much as possible. That left foot will NOT stay -

it is not corrected as well as the right foot.

Our next appointment is in a week- it is impossible to get in any

sooner than that. I am going to insist she be recasted and I'm also

going to insist we get a recommendation for the s. I'm

waiting to hear back from Dr. P about the pics I sent. But until

then, what to do?

I dutifully put her shoes on every night at bedtime, and within 5

minutes she's out of them. If she does stay in them until I get her

in the crib, it is inevitable that the shoe will be off when I go

check on her a few hours later. Should I even bother? I feel so

guilty for not continuing to try, but it just isn't staying on.

To top this off the new baby could arrive at any time, and it's just

adding to the whole stress with this foot thing - like we have to

deal with both at the exact same time and there's not enough mommy to

go around.

AAAAARRGH!!! Guess I just needed to vent...

Darby,

Sending big hugs, try not to stress, it's not good for any of you -- especially

baby (beautiful name by the way, can't wait to hear all about her when

she gets here). I would keep trying but try not to worry too much; if you are

planning on having her re-casted anyway is it so terrible if she gets out of the

shoes for a week? Although I would not recommend just letting her be free of

them, keep putting them on so she doesn't think she is going to get away with

not wearing them. I don't know if you have considered just keeping her casted

until you can get shoes, is this an option? Have you tried waiting

until she is already in bed and asleep and then putting the shoes on her? I do

this a lot with Sammy just because he falls asleep nursing right around the time

we need to put his shoes back on. Is she untying and getting out of them or

just slipping out? Okay, here's another idea I just thought of don't know if

it will work or not but it may not hurt to try, get

a pair of footed pajamas with snaps, probably will need to be a size too big

for her, put the footed part on her feet *over* the shoes and snap as many snaps

as you can so they stay snug around the shoe. I used to do this with Sammy when

we had a bunch of sleepers with feet that people had given us not knowing about

his clubfoot. The footie part is really snug around the shoe and if you can

snap all the way down to the ankle it may help keep her from pulling it out,

anyway, just a thought. If you try it, let me know if it works!

I just want you to know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and your

family to find a solution to this very difficult time.... I have a daughter that

has a left club foot, she is a twin and also has a older sister that is 4....it

has been a big challenge to us to keep her in her shoes due to her screaming for

hours upon hours....we did the casting, tenotomy and FAB's and after she went

full time in the shoes the Dr. dropped her down to 12 hours right away and we

didn't know better so we did it and that is when it started to bother her so

being on this website I have come to realize it was probably from her foot

relapsing and it actually did hurt her... so needless to say we are going to be

starting over from scratch and she is 10 months old and I am relieved at our

decisions but also very nervous that the same thing is going to happen... we

were ready to do surgery until we found this website.... it has been awesome for

the support!!! So I do hope for you that you find a way to

keep her in her shoes without to much complications.... I do hope you have a

good support group while you are having your new bundle of joy....

Best of luck and keep us posted on your new arrival and how things are working

out for you!!!!

Darby,

Who is Livi's doctor again? It seemed like you were definitely on the

right road. Please don't give up. Keep trying to get them as tight as

possible. I know it is frustrating, but please keep trying. If you give

up and leave the foot out, it will only get worse. Hopefully Dr.P will

get back to you ASAP. There has to be a reason why the foot keeps

slipping. Does she have narrow feet? Does she cry before she slips her

foot out, like she is uncomfortable? Maybe she is Houdini and s

is the answer. If that is the case, count on 3 weeks before receiving the

s, so maybe a cast will be the best answer until then.

Hang in there. But please, please try to keep the shoe on. Have you

tried using vice grips to tighten the strap? Don't laugh, I've done that.

Good luck, keep us posted, and try not to stress.

Have you tried different socks? We used the socks with grips on the bottom

from The Gap and Old Navy. they worked great. Hope that helps.

I'm so sorry you're having this worry, and right when the new baby is

due.. It must be overwhelming..

Have you tried lacing the shoes upside down? That is, with the tie

ending up at the toe instead of the top of the shoe?

I hope you can figure something out.. hang in there, and take care of

yourself,

and Claire

Vice grips!!! Sorry, had to laugh - couldn't help it!

Livi goes to Children's in Seattle. Dr. P got back to me today -

good news, her feet are NOT atypical, they are just short and chubby.

He says she is slipping out due to the limited dorsiflexion on her

left foot. He does think the s are the answer, and he wants

her in them 16 hours a day, not just night time like we were told to

do.

SO I am resolved to start the process of getting them today. We

don't have the $$$ to just pay upfront, so I submitted an application

for medicaid yesterday - I'm going to see if I can get my own

insurance to cover them also. SO we'll see. I'm going to try not to

stress about it too much - though maybe if I do it will jump start my

labor :)

Thanks for all the support!

We've tried a bunch of different socks too, and the only ones that

seem to work for us are from Target. I think the brand is Just One

Year by s. They are kind of thicker, and are made of a terry

cloth type material. The Old Navy socks didn't work for us either.

They were too thin and Aleksander would wiggle out in those. The

socks we use now also have grips like the Old Navy socks, but are

just a lot thicker.

Aleksander has small feet though...so I'm not sure if they make

these socks in bigger sizes. Worth looking into though.

It should work but if it doesn't, search mdorthotics and it'll come up. I

did that last night and the search engines are finally pulling his site

up. They are very different shoes.

We also have pics of the different braces at the CFPics group's photo

library. If you're a member there, you can check them out any time. The

link to 's website is also there in the link's section.
