Guest guest
Thks RH for sharing your own findings, some of it really heartening eg " a disconnect between my IQ and performance " tells us we may not be completely losing it, just need to work out ways to manage the cognitive deficits! pamela Re: foggy brain Regarding the diet, this is another thing that is YMMV for mito patients. I do well on a high protein, high fat, low carb diet. High carbs make me pass out. I can fast for over 12 hours relatively easily, others on this list need to eat frequently and even eat small amounts overnight. It would be nice to have some nutritional guidance, but it seems hit and miss, even for the " mito experts " . The reason I first tried an Atkins-type diet is because my absence seizures were getting pretty bad, and I thought a diet that tended towards ketosis would help. Now it seems to be something other than that, as my health is improved by the diet even when not in ketosis. I work full time as a scientist, and find that " foggy brain " helps my ADD stay under control, LOL! I am able to hold a conversation, but word finding issues get worse with stress, and I find my writing has suffered also, where I regularly drop the last letters of words. It just takes me more time to do things, but since I was originally a pretty quick worker, now I'm about average with the extra checking time. I had neuropsych testing where they showed a disconnect between my IQ and performance on memory tests. Take care, RH > > > > Hi everyone, > > Do any of you have problems with foggy brain? Guest guest
You are welcome - it is very interesting in a scientific way, as I do have some trouble holding conversations, but am very easily able to do complicated work on the computer. Also my visual problems don't seem to always correlate with my level of weakness or cognitive issues. I think many with chronic illnesses of one sort or another find they have to " switch " - find tasks that they can do, not insist on staying with things they can't do. I find that research, which is relatively independent, suits me much better than consulting, where there is a lot of interaction with clients. I also like the fact that writing or typing gives you " a second chance " to fix mistakes - the spoken word is a bit harder to erase or modify after something is said Take care, RH > > > > > > Hi everyone, > > > Do any of you have problems with foggy brain? Guest guest
goodness...the more i read... i too experience this, and i have described it as foggy brain too. Only, I thought it was motherhood. Since I had my third child (she'll be three in May), I have had what I've called Mommy Brain fog or brain cloud. But I'm starting to think it may be more closely related to disease, b/c I also find that it worsens as my symptoms do. I get hung up on words or thoughts, and concentration is very difficult, and those brownouts- i know *exactly* what you're talking about. I'm in college now, and it has caused serious problems when studying. I'm dropping my math class for the third time! > > > > > > Hi everyone, > > > Do any of you have problems with foggy brain? Guest guest
Please contact your college's counseling center or Dean for Students (or Student Life, something like that). They should have a coordinator for ADA compliance for disabled students. I had a very positive experience with my school's disabled students coordinator, and had some accommodations including finishing most of my doctoral work from home and changing a classroom that was difficult to access. Accommodations could include extra time for tests and homework, and also being able to eat, drink, or take medication in class without being in trouble with the professor.
