Guest guest
I'm sorry you are having these problems. I'm going to throw out some ideas, but they may or may not help in your case. If you haven't done so, please write up an ADA accomodation letter and give it to your personal department. In it, make sure you list those accomodations they have given you, plus something about giving you time to develop a plan for dealing with your " inattentiveness for details " . I would suggest thinking about using a scooter to see if using less energy for walking will give you more energy for remembering. It would also give you a place to put papers, etc. so you don't set them down. The other idea is a memory book - this is something that you have with you at all times and would have to find a way to carry it and have it visable as a reminder. Again, a scooter would be helpful here. In it, you put a reminder to clock in and out. You write down things that you need to do when you find out and you look at it as often as you need to. It takes time to learn the system and use it effectively, but I found it very, very helpful for students I have worked with. You might also want to contact your state rehabilitation services. Their goal is to help you stay employed. I know of people in Michigan that were paid minimum wage by the Rehabilitation folks to assist the client in carrying things, remembering things, etc. My neighbor (his job involved driving places at various times of the day) had a driver for the year after he had seizures and couldn't drive. I hope you find some solutions that allow you to keep your job. Hugs, laurie > I need all of you input or I am going to loose my job. Guest guest
Hi , I am so sorry to hear of the problems you are having. As a person who has had a terrible memory all of her life (My friends in school called me the " absent minded professor " ) I can offer a few suggestions that have helped me. I write everything down. Like you I leave myself notes. I also have some OCD tendencies because of it. Before I leave an area I have made it a habit to check myself. Do I have my purse, my car keys, the papers I was working with etc. It really makes me crazy, but that is what I have had to do to compensate for my bad memory. I also have other people remind me to do things. As I was writing this e-mail my son walked by and said " Mom have you taken your pill yet " I hadn't! LOL :-) Lately I found a tool that has really helped. I got a PDA (personal digital assistant). I put everything in there my schedule, things I am working on, and especially reminders. (make sure you back it up often) It has an alarm feature and I set it to go off when I need to be reminded. I have also done this with my cell phone, pager and a watch I bought just for that purpose. Many times I set up many different reminders for the same thing. That way if I don't hear one, another is likely to help. You might set up a daily check list that you have to go through before you leave the office and/or one for the morning. Wrap it around your car keys so you have to see it before you go. Dumb little tricks like this have saved me so many times. I am not saying that I never forget things any more, but it does help. Guest guest
Have you had your blood ammonia levels and anion gap (electrolytes) checked? Your boss needs to understand that you have a medical condition, and you may need accommodations. If you are functioning mostly, but have problems with things like clocking in and out, and filing, you can get help for those things (for example a secretary could help you clock in and out, or at least remind you). I find walking is EXTREMELY taxing for me, and causes me to have various symptoms that you list. Intense exercise is good for me though. Perhaps you could plan your day to minimize walking (like planning a mailman's route to be most efficient). Unless you are a danger to yourself or others, I think your boss would have a tough time saying she complied with the ADA and had to let you go anyway. Also you could use Family Leave (assuming you're in the U.S.A.) on an intermittent basis if necessary. Perhaps a different type of job would work better for you, one with less walking - as I said, for me the walking makes everything worse, luckily I have to walk only tens of feet from my car to office. Take care, RH > > I need all of you input or I am going to loose my job. I have been having > major problems with my memory and functioning.
