Poop smearing issues can mean a lot if different things, especially for a two

year old. Only a parent can read the emotional state of the child, is he

expressing delight at a new tactile substance? Looking physically

uncomfortable? Angry? Obsessive? Check for food allergies (dairy in

particular) and yeast - an itchy bottom can lead to the discovery of and

playing with the poop. On the behavioral side, it can also be an

attention-getting tactic - it is important to try very hard not to react

dramatically to this behavior because that reinforces it. Clean them up and

move on. We had poop issues when we were expecting a child, too - kids can

sense the heightened emotional atmosphere that comes with expecting a child,

and this is one way they can express their anxiety (for our ASD child,

anxiety and food allergies can cause poop issues). The parents should get a

read on the overall demeanor of the child (determine if are there any other

issues) and, if it doesn't subside fairly soon, consult with the pediatrician

and a good behavioral therapist.

We have dealt with this a lot and it's very hard to get good advice on it -

our behavioral therapist has been a godsend. Private e-mails with questions

are welcome since this topic may be a little too much for those of you

looking at the list for recipes. . .

Good luck
