Dear Groupies, I hope this finds everyne (realsoably ) well. I'm just

posting to see if you people can help me out here. -- I just have some

some questions about gastric emptying studies, done to detect

gastroparesis, so often aproblem with us mito folk --

do people find that you have to repeat an emptying test every time you

go to a different GI doctor? Have you had the test done with eggs or

do they make you eat something else? And how long do you have to wait

around? I know some places to a 2 hour test and some a 4 hour test.

I have found in the past my doctors don't put a lot of faith in this

test -- is this what has been your experiences? i would really

appreciate hearing a reply from you guys, as this is your chance to

have some kind of input into this test. The GPDA (dismotility

association (that i volunteer for) is working with gi docs to

standardize this test)

thanks a lot, celia

HI Celia,

Each radiology department sets it's own protocol. Many use eggs and toast,

others use small " canned " meals like beef stew. Yet other departments do a mix

of solid and liquid studies. The timing seems to depend on the equipment in use

and the protocol. Some say 1/1/2 to 2 hours , others say 4 and truly watch the

progression over 4 hours.

My girls have had to repeat the study each times emptying seems to worsen (and

the results have been different each time). Their GI doc has modified treatment

based on the results.

-Dear Joanne, Thanks for responding. It is the fact that these tests

are so various from institution to institution that the motility docs

are looking at forming a consensus oppinion on one standardized test.

I'm sorry to hear that your daughters' tests are gradually showing

decreasing motility. i hope theyare getting good treatment, celia
