Guest guest
Kori, I think it was you that had mentioned that was able to modify the shoes to make them qualify as AFO's, hence the reason they are using the AFO insurance code. My orthotics department doesn't believe me apparently - do you happen to know why they qualify as AFO's? They all think I'm nuts... and they also told me that if they were to order the p/m fab (love the new abbreviation) it would be $700-800 instead of the ~$400 that it is online, simply because they are orthotists. Does anyone know if that is true? ....and if it is true (here comes my vent), why the heck should it matter how much it costs for them to order them if it is what my child NEEDS to help her feet? As if there is a budget - we must correct her feet for less than $xx.xx amount. The more I think about it, the more that answer I got from them upsets me. So angry right now......ok, maybe more just frustrated...no, I'm angry too. The drive to Portland is looking better and better, but I hate to give up on my own hospital this soon. I'll talk to the doc tomorrow when we go in and see what he says..maybe the stress will jump start my labor. Thanks for listening, Darby Livi 3.15.04 bi cf due TOMORROW (do the babies always come out, or do some women stay pregnant forever? )
Guest guest
Darby, They're nuts. Plain old nuts. Who are they to say whether the shoes qualify as AFO's or not? And the price is the price, why would it cost more if they order it? What a crock! They're nuts I tell ya! I don't know exactly what he did to them to make them qualify. You'd have to ask that. But it's something... exactly why would these people question it anyway? Are THEY the insurance company? Why do they care what it costs if your insurance pays? Have them call about this. There's not a single person on the planet that could tell them these things about the P/M FAB other than himself. And I SERIOUSLY doubt he told them it'd cost $800 for the shoes. OMFG!!! Who are these people and why do they have their heads up their rear ends anyway? I so love the *Orthotist God Complex*... I got it today as I ARGUED with one about whether or not my daughter's bar was too short or not. Finally threatened to leave, thought better of it and asked point blank... " why do I have to argue about this with you anyway? " she says, " well, I'd have to cut it and use hose clamps to hold it together, and it may take a little while " ... Well WTF do you think I'm here in the first place?? I just like to come up to this brace shop, wait around for half an hour to be told the bar length is fine yet my daughter wakes at night saying " ow " with leg cramps? Which STARTED when she got this new bar?? Exactly why do you think I wouldn't WAIT for you to do this? I waited for half an hour for someone to come out and see me and I had a freaking appointment! UGH!!! I was PISSED!~!! I think she hates me... I hope so... ok, that was all about me sorry... but you're right... and your brace shop people are loony in the brain and very wrong. would not charge them $800... Exactly why are these people so NOT into helping people? Guest guest
THANK YOU!!!! Glad someone understands... why must everything be such a battle with these people?! I'm going to have a talk with Dr. Schmale tomorrow during our appointment and see if maybe he can get them to see things my way. I'm going to ask that Livi go back in casts too which makes me sad.... the longer it takes for me to get the brace, the longer she'll have to be in them I guess. Can't believe the lady argued with you about the bar length... and didn't want to fix it because it might take awhile?!?!?! Amazing. I emailed with my q's so I can print out his answers and show the people what he said in writing. We'll see. Guest guest
Darby, you are going to Children's in Seattle, right? Let me know if you manage anything. I HATE the orthotist there! He actually argued with me about doing something with Kai's old Markells that Dr Mosca & Dr P both had advised us to keep doing and have the orthotist help us with (a wedge under the toes) ... finally I told him to call up and ask Dr M, THEN he conceeded to do it He also looked at us like we were from another planet when we explained how putting the buckles on the inside made hooking the shoes SO MUCH EASIER! lol Overall, I really can't stand him and never even thought of having Children's order the 's for us. Guest guest
GAH! See what happens when you have to reformat your hard drive and Microsoft will no longer let you use Outlook to check mail on an account that you have had for YEARS and is supposed to be " grandfathered " in for Outlook Express use?!?! Anyway, after I sent this I saw the rest of this conversation and where it ended up. All I can say is that Children's orthotics SUCKS! I cannot tell you how relieved I was to get the 's and not have to deal with those #(%( anymore! Dr Mosca is great - a little obtuse sometimes, but arent we all - but I would like to throw the orthotics guys out the window in orthopedics! (For those who arent familiar with Seattle Children's, orthopedics is on the 7th floor) I had a really fun conversation with our insurance about the P/M Brace. First the lady told me that they do not pay for ANY foot orthotics ... I got to explain that they had been paying for foot orthotics for my son for a year before we got this brace (since we got a prototype the first one did not cost us anything). Then she refused to tell me what they authorize in payment for a FAB. I then asked her what codes WOULD they pay for? She told me she could not tell me that either, but that I could have Dr Mosca call and find out! I havent called back yet as I was wanting to wait until I had the invoice that was going to send with the impression kit before going rounds again ........ and on that note, how long did it take the rest of you to get impression kits?? I have called and asked for one TWICE in the last 3 months and still havent gotten one Kai's shoes are way too small and he is not wearing them more than he is wearing them because they are hurting his foot ... at best he can wear them every other day, but lately it is more like every 3rd day At this rate he is going to need surgery and all of the work we have done will be moot! Guest guest
Angel, Call any orthotics shop or even a podiatrist to get a foot form. A chiropractor may have them lying around the office too. I got our form right after I called, but that was at least 2 months ago if not more. I think it was before her birthday actually. I think I posted about the codes and billing as AFO's shortly after I talked to him and the kit arrived shortly after that. I sat on it trying to figure out how I was going to afford them and only recently made her impressions. I wish I hadn't though because I would have sent ours to you. Kai needs his shoes sooner than Darbi that's for darn sure. But he's got to make an insole or mold for the kid's larger size feet. Darbi's about out of size 5 shoes and wearing 6's pretty well. What's Kai wearing now? Call , you may have slipped through the cracks a bit. Jeane, his wife can help you too. But they've got to get the forms of the feet to make the larger shoe mold I think. I should have sent Darbi's impressions back long ago, waiting for Shriners has worked out for us but at least he'd have bigger feet molds to work with already. Try the shops around you for a kit right away. Isn't there an orthotics shop at the hospital there? Dirk said it was pretty built up when he was there a while back, there has to be someone in that town who has a kit they can sell you. I'd bet on Naturopaths and Chiropractors to have one available if no one else does. I'm into Shriners on Tuesday and I'll ask them to either send the impressions back right away or I will ship them myself. Either way, they'll be there by the end of next week. And if Kai's feet are about the same size, the mold he makes for her shoe should be good to go for Kai's too. And then he's going to have to get onto the next size up because their feet grow a lot this 3rd year and Kai will need new shoes sooner than later and longer than we will. The three orthotists I've worked with down here have actually been very cool. This new one I talked to, I haven't met but over the phone but he was pretty excited to see how this all plays out so I'm hopeful for him. My regular one is a pretty great guy, and actually humors me with pretty good attitude. He's from NY with a fun outgoing personality and knows that I know what I'm talking about with all this. He's a keeper too. But that woman... just couldn't get past the idea that the brace was *fine* three times when I told her no, it wasn't. ugh... So I've made at least one enemy there too. Nice to see you back! Kori At 12:40 AM 5/14/2005, you wrote: >GAH! Guest guest
Angel, I wouldn't even bother with Children's orthotics to do the impression or bill the insurance. Hopefully you will get yours soon!! I have the billing codes that the s said to use, but Children's refuses to use those billing codes because it classifies the shoes as AFO's, which technically they're not. I'm going to write a letter to someone at the hospital- haven't figured out who that is yet, but someone higher up than the people in the orthotics clinic are going to be hearing from me. Children's has the ability to help me get what is medically NECESSARY for my baby. The Markells simply do not work for Livi. But due to their financial aid policy of not helping to pay for anything they don't normally stock, combined with a stupid $400 mark up when all they have to do is call and order the darn shoes, they are doing two things. One, they are punishing Olivia for her difficult feet - which is unfair. Up to 5% of kids with club feet just aren't made for the Markells - so they are basically saying they refuse to help those kids. Two, they have made the cost so outrageous that I (someone who qualifies for their financial aid for a reason - because we desperately need it) can't afford their help! It's not as if I want the shoes so Livi can make a fashion statement - it's really our only option at this point. And god forbid these shoes don't work... I don't even want to think about that. We are ordering the shoes on our own, using the money which we were saving for my maternity leave (namely, money for the car payment, phone, electricity, and insurance payments that are due 6/15) and who knows how long it will take for the insurance to reimburse, since the s are unknown in the Aetna system. Stupid stupid stupid. Sorry for my long rant again.. I'm still upset about the whole thing. Darby > GAH! Guest guest
I hadn't thought of trying to just get the foot form, but I did try to get a local shop to do the form and send them ... got the same line of crap as Darby did with Children's ... they would have to have the brace sent to them, and then they would mark it up BLAH BLAH BLAH. I never thought of a chiropractor tho ... I will have to check into it. Then again, Kai is just at a size 5.5 - 6 right now (for his big foot anyway! lol) I bet I could take measurements and have adjust off Darbi's impressions since it sounds like they are right at the same size. I should check with and see if that would be ok with him; after all, he did the first pair with nothing more than me telling him to " draw around that form with a pencil " lol. I don't know what the deal is with them forgetting to send the impression kit out twice, but we are getting pretty desperate now! I bet I have a 2 year old that alot of people here would love to have ... he BEGS to get his shoes on and THROWS A FIT when I have to tell him no because his foot is all munched up! Crazy, isnt it? lol Thanks for the welcome back. My stupid hard drive started convulsing after I downloaded a video driver (from Microsoft, no less!) and ended up with fatal errors and had to be completely reformatted ... then we find it is about to go out anyway, so I am running the system pretty bare to spare myself big losses when it finally does go kaput. Add that to the fact that I am back on dial-up again (I hate cutting financial corners, but DANG these medical bills are getting big!) and stupid Outlook won't support my hotmail anymore ... GRRR! Well, suffice to say I am not having the best of computer times LOL Angel Caitlen 8/29/97 Arica 8/22/01 Kai 12/31/02 ----Original Message Follows---- Reply-To: nosurgery4clubfoot To: nosurgery4clubfoot Subject: RE: Billing s as AFO's/frustrated with orthotists! Date: Sat, 14 May 2005 08:37:35 -0700 Angel, Call any orthotics shop or even a podiatrist to get a foot form. Guest guest
Just an idea for where to get an impression: your dentist. I know mine is friendly and would think it'd be a kick to help us out. Hmmm... Police departments, do they keep these kind of things on hand in the forensics lab? Did you already try your local medical supply store? Ok, it's late. Glad to see you back.
