Guest guest
Hi Everyone, Aurora is now 6months and been in her boots 5weeks. She has Atypical right foot (confirmed by Dr Ponseti). We went for a check up with her consultant and he noticed she had a crease on her heel and mentioned that this needs to be kept and eye on in case further problems occur. (She did have alot of creases when born and is Atypical). So he wants us back in four weeks and told me to keep doing her excercises. But slightly varied the one for her heel to help get rid of crease. Aurora was treated by a highly recommended Ponseti doc in the UK. So I know everything was done right. Has anyone else had problems with Creases with Atypical foot? Whilst in boots 23/7? I know Atypical is more difficult to treat, but what is the likely chance of further problems? What should I look for? Any info appreciated. She loves her boots and all night since getting them. So she is def wearing them the full 23 hours. Thanks Julzd and Aurora (Atypical)
Guest guest
Hey Julzd, Logan is now 10 mts and in his shoes for 23/7 until May 23rd. We had a rough start getting his feet fixed until we found Dr. Ponseti. He wears his shoes faithfully but i am seeing were the crease in his right foot is coming back. We have an appointment with Dr. P on May 25th so we will find out then. Think positive and everything will work out. Hey everyone wish us luck on the 25th, BACK TO IOWA maybe it wont be -12 this time around. Guest guest
crease in heel...or above it? Does your son still have adequate dorsiflextion? Does his heel seat into the 's? A lot of times with these atypical feet they need a second tenotomy because the Achilles doesn't grow at the same rate as their leg... That crease is usually caused, I believe, by the heel being too high. Ponseti told me last time we saw him that it can happen regardless of wearing the shoes faithfully, especially in atypical cases. a Holland pandlholland@...> wrote: Hey Julzd, Logan is now 10 mts and in his shoes for 23/7 until May 23rd. Guest guest
Is your crease in the center of his foot... With Gabe it was a sign of the cavus deformity... We had to wear the 's with the middle strap VERY tight... GAbe got pressure sores on both feet for a while right where the middle strap sat from the head of the talus rubbing from the inside out, but the cavus corrected. Since he's been doing a lot of standing; we haven't had a recurrence. Of course that was right after he came out of his casts the first time... a relaspe in the cavus deformity may need to be casted again...? a Holland pandlholland@...> wrote:Hey Julzd, Logan is now 10 mts and in his shoes for 23/7 until May 23rd. Guest guest
Gosh yes! I don't know if anyone told you, but it is NOT uncommon for atypical feet to have to be recasted (even with the sandals) a couple times before they stablize. The 's help alot (our experience with Markells was that relapse was almost instant - within a month), but an atypical foot just doesnt want to stay corrected. Our biggest battle was actually with the crease on the bottom of the foot, followed by the crease on the side of the foot, but we have seen the crease at the heel come and go a couple times too. Growth spurts are really bad for it because it seems to take the tendons a few weeks to catch up with the rest of the foot ... we have seen more than one set of recasting after a growth spurt Once Aurora begins to walk her feet should stabilize some and the risk of relapse should drop considerably. FWIW, in the Markell's (and this was before atypical was recognized by more than 1-2 doctors in the world) our son's foot became a twisted facimile of a normal foot. I can't tell you how horrible it was to know something was wrong and not have the doctor recognize it! With the 's we see much less drastic changes .... it is more like subtle changes over time, and the time gets longer and longer between .... we hope soon (like say, as soon as we get new sandles!) we won't be getting anymore new casts. I bet if they had been an option for us from the beginning we would be way past our problems at this point! Guest guest
Yeah, relapse in cavus requires further casting I am currious, how did you deal with the pressure sores on the midfoot? We can't tighten down Kai's shoes on the arch like we should for cavus correction because he not only gets pressure sores, but he gets no sleep Since he is now big enough to unhook his shoes himself (he does it every morning before even letting us know he is awake LOL) it is impossible to keep them on him when they hurt. When I make him keep them on he is crying every 15 - 20 mins and no one gets any sleep I am seriously beginning to think that it would be easier on everyone all around if they would just do a release on that damn plantar tendon/ligament! I hate the thought of going thru all of this just to end up doing surgery, but the only time I have ever seen Kai's CF be anywhere NEAR the same length as his other was after Dr P casted it a year and a half ago ... Of course, it doesnt help that has yet to send us an impression kit and Kai's shoes are seriously too small Angel Caitlen 8/29/97 Arica 8/22/01 Kai 12/31/02 ----Original Message Follows---- Reply-To: nosurgery4clubfoot To: nosurgery4clubfoot Subject: Re: Crease in heel and Atypical Date: Fri, 13 May 2005 13:35:32 -0700 (PDT) Is your crease in the center of his foot... Guest guest
I used lambs wool to cushion the sore that is caused by the middle strap.. It eventually heals, but yes, in the mean time Gabe does a lot of crying and whining about them. I also used thick winter-type socks from the Gap or Old Navy... the one's with the no-slip surface. The lambs wool seems to work better than anything else though. When we unwrap it I literally use half the width on the each foot per sock change.
